Album Review
The Bye Bye Blackbirds cover ground that's familiar to pop/rock fans with good taste on this seven-song EP/mini-album. The late-'70s power pop of Elvis Costello and slightly more mainstream (though not mainstream per se) and romantic acts than him might be the most frequent reference points. Bands like Badfinger and both the Merseybeat and Abbey Road-era Beatles might be fairly singled out for similarities in approach as well. There's also a bit of country-rock on hand when Joe Goldmark lends pedal steel to a couple of numbers. It's pleasant, fluent stuff with good harmonies and electric-acoustic guitar blends, though not groundbreaking. Guitarist Bradley Slaught wrote most of the material here, though bassist/singer William Duke (who composed just one) put out a CD of material with a somewhat more idiosyncratic and personal feel, William Duke Presents...The Ghost That Would Not Be, around the same time.
