iTunes Review

Nearly two decades into their career, Disciple clinches their hold on the hearts of Christian rock fans with Horseshoes & Handgrenades. After returning to their Tennessee roots for 2008’s Southern Hospitality, the band goes for a broader-based sound in this collection of snarling rockers and searing ballads. Though they’ve tempered their sound over the years, Disciple has never retreated from its militant brand of metallic testimony — this time out, tracks like “Dear X, You Don’t Own Me” and “The Ballad of St. Augustine” spit defiance in the face of the Evil One. Lead singer Kevin Young wails righteously as he proclaims the power of salvation, backed by the twin-guitar assault of Andrew Welch and Micah Sannan. Ferocious riffage drives home “Shot Heard ‘Round the World” and spurs on the near-boogie tempo of “Battle Lines.” The album’s message of inner struggle and redemption reaches its climax on the string-draped “Worth the Pain.” This is spiritual warfare in the trenches, captured by a veteran band that knows the fight first-hand.

Amazing Album

I've never heard a Disciple album before Horseshoes & Hand Grenades but my friends kept telling me to check it out. I downloaded the album through Disciple's pre-order on their website. I wasn't expecting much so imagine my shock when I heard the epicness that is H&HG. Every song is beautifully crafted lyrically...some of the best Christian lyrics I've heard in a while. And the heaviness of songs like Shot, Ballad, and Battle Lines are just plain awesome. Dear X and Worth The Pain are more down to earth but equally as awesome.

The only song I didn't like was Collision. It seemed bland and lacking compared to the other tracks. But then again, it IS a near perfect record. If you've never heard Disciple (like me before this album) then I'd definitely recommend you check H&HG out. If you're into any sort of rock, you'll love this album.

GREAT ALBUM + Song reviews!

Disciple is pretty new on this album. They have all new band members in case you didn't know, so their sound is kind of different. It sounds like Scars Remain and Southern Hospitality mixed together with Decyfer Down. Song Reviews:

Dear X, You Don't Own Me - 9/10
Great radio hit from the single. Probably the favorite of Disciple "ballad" fans, contestable to Invisible.

Watch it Burn - 8.5/10
Disciple's orignal guitarist Brad Noah plays on this track, so its kind of a more southern rock style song. Cool Solo.

Invisible - 8.5/10
More "ballady" style song but really good nonetheless. After the World kind of message.

The Ballad of St. Augustine - 10/10
If you're a fan of Disciple's heavy songs, GET THIS ONE! It's by far the best hard song on the album. Awesome drum solo intro.
The "breakdown" if you wanna call it that is sick!

Shot Heard 'Round the World - 6/10
The chorus is kind of cool, but other than that it's very different from Disciple's regular heavyness. It's got cookie monster kind of growling which Disciple has never used before.

Collision - 7/10
Another different song, cool chorus, Kevin shows off his voice in the chorus. It's Decyfer Down kind of hard rock.

Battle Lines - 8/10
Very heavy. Much like Demon Hunter in the style. All around pretty cool. Fairly melodic for being so heavy.

Remedy - 6/10
Another different song. Rock style but unlike anything else by Disciple. Cool bridge.

Eternity - 6.5/10
More "different" rock. Pretty cool cool melodic chorus.

Revolution: Now - 8/10
Awesome rock song still somewhat different from anything. Awesome stop after second chorus.

Deafening - 6.5/10
Again an example of Disciple's new different sound. Not bad.

Worth the Pain 7/10
More different but cool album ending. Nice piano piece mixes well with the rest of the song.

Biography

Formed: 1991

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Disciple was formed in 1991 by friends Kevin Young, Brad Noah, and Tim Barrett in an attempt to spread the Gospel while playing the loud, metallic music they loved. Over the years, their style evolved into one similar to many secular alternative metal groups, as they toured churches, high schools, colleges, and similar venues. Their self-released debut, What Was I Thinking came out in 1995, followed by an EP, My Daddy Can Whip Your Daddy, on Warner Resound in 1997. Their sophomore full-length effort,...
