Phenomenal in every way
Purchased this album 2 weeks ago and I haven't stopped listening to it since. It is a huge mature step for the band since their last album and I agree with the other reviewer who said the band took a lot of risks musically here by combining different styles across the board. Fortunately, they were successful in the mix and hostage calm created one of my favorite albums of 2010. Definite influences of dag nasty, gorilla biscuits, and even embrace but they also go further with all sorts of genres as well.
Gets better and better
This album is not what you'd expect if you were looking for something hard, raspy, and super punkish. No intense double-bass drop D breakdowns, no screaming, nothing angry.This is the epitome of melodic punk: the songs have phenomenal vocals, amazing tempo changes, and tons of positive energy and deep meaning.
For example, "Whither on the Vine" has to be one of the most creative songs I've ever heard. It goes from like a dark spanishy tango to a happy pop-punk song. It's one of the coolest transitions I've ever heard.
I can't say enough good things about Hostage Calm. One of my favorites easily of the last year. Between them and The Menzingers, I'll be set for months.
Risk
What a giant leap! It's almost as if Johnny marr joined generator era bad religion. This is truly what punk rock is about taking risks and being true to them selves. I wish more bands had the courage to challenge their listeners like this!
