iTunes Review

You can feel the sweat flying off Neil Diamond as he storms his way through the music captured on Hot August Night. Recorded live at Hollywood's Greek Theater in August 1972 before a frenzied crowd, Diamond feeds off his audience's energy and delivers a performance that's half rock 'n' roll, half evangelistic revival. His commanding baritone never sounded better then when he tears into classics like "Cherry, Cherry," "Cracklin' Rosie" and "Red, Red Wine," delivering each inescapable hook with the touch of a master. Few singer-songwriters could pull off the melodrama of "Shilo" and "I Am, I Said" with the enraptured conviction that Diamond displays here. The emotional heart of the concert is "Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show," a gospel-rock tour-de-force that sounds ready to raise the dead. Hot August Night is spectacular proof of Diamond's magic as a live artist and remains a swelteringly intense listening experience.

Customer Reviews

One of the greatest live albums....

My parents had it on 8-track and vinyl, then I got it on cd and ultimately the remastered/bonus track edition. What none of the reviews here address--due respect--is how brilliant a SHOW it was. Remember making mix tapes? This concert is the perfect template: classical intro, huge explosion, continued force, slow down, upper-cut ("Cherry Cherry" is absolutely blistering), meander around the human condition, and then nail audiences with the Wagnerian progression of what some of us remember as "Side Four"--"Holly Holy" through the finale. I've cried unashamedly during that final organ chord. You actually have to learn to breathe properly listening (and singing?) to it from beginning to end. I've seen Diamond more than once, admittedly into the "sequined years," if that's what they are. "Saving Silverman" is clever and hits him spot on. Whatever. Fine. But this package is truly magnificent. Like others have testified, it's on my I-pod, and always will be.

A classic for all time

One of my favorite albums of all times! One of the first records I ever listened to and fell in love with in the 70's. I had it as an LP 30 years ago, then as a CD in the 90's and now its on my iPod. It never grows old! This live collection of Neil's classic songs are even better than the studio versions.

This is hands down my favorite album of all time. I had listened to Neil Diamond for a few years before I heard this, and I was totally unprepard for the power and passion in his performance. He leads the band with his gutar playing which is raw and full of energy. He was just over a bad cold when this show was recorded, and it makes his voice sound so clear, even when he is screaming. The opening song entrance is spine tingling, and my favorite version of my favorite song is here as well, Solitary man. He really rocks on this album, but the tender moments are powerful as well. Neil is the greatest!

In a career that began in the 1960s, Neil Diamond became a major recording artist, an internationally successful touring act, and a songwriter whose compositions produced hits for himself and others. His earliest recognition, in fact, came as a songwriter associated with the Brill Building era of Tin Pan Alley in the early '60s. But he soon branched out into recording and performing, and by the early '70s was topping the charts with the self-written singles "Cracklin' Rosie" and "Song Sung Blue."...
