iTunes Review

Need proof that the Rolling Stones were once the “World’s Greatest Rock n’ Roll Band”? Originally issued as a 2-LP set, Hot Rocks makes an open and shut case, beginning with “Time is On My Side” and plowing through instant ‘60s classics as “Satisfaction,” “Get Off Of My Cloud,” “19th Nervous Breakdown,” “Ruby Tuesday,’ “Jumping Jack Flash,” “Honky Tonk Women,” and “Gimme Shelter,” several of which were never previously available on LP. There isn’t a bum track to be heard. From the band’s early British Invasion singles through their transformation as rock’s “bad boys,” chronicling the era’s ups and downs (“Mother’s Little Helper”), its sexism (“Under My Thumb”), its sexual liberation (“Let Spend the Night Together”), its undercurrents of violence (“Jumping Jack Flash,” “Street Fightin’ Man,”  “Brown Sugar”) and its suspicion of hope (“You Can’t Always Get What You Want”), the Rolling Stones were nearly larger than life. It’s almost inconceivable that they accomplished so much in so few years. And this is only an introduction. Their studio albums from Aftermath to Beggars Banquet, Let it Bleed, Sticky Fingers and Exile on Main Street alone deserve to be heard in their brilliant entirety as well.

Customer Reviews

You have to have this album

Every review of this album is 5-stars, and I still had to write in. This is the classic classic album. It is the Stones. If you are stranded on a desert island (with a solar-powered iPod), you need this album for the sake of your ever-lasting soul.

greatest stones compilation

It's amazing what the greatest rock n roll band in the world ever did in only 8 years. The A side gives you wonderful classics like Time is On My Side, Satisfaction, Paint it Black, and Under My Thumb. You don't think it can get any better, but the B side is just as great. Just look at the songs, there's not much else you can say but perfection. Every song on both cd's are favorites of mine. I had the privelage of seeing the best band ever on September 17th at the Pepsi and it was the best night of my life. They are still and always will be the best ever. My favorite CD. LONG LIVE THE STONES!!!

Simply the best compilation I've ever seen (or heard)

Let's face the facts here. The only Rolling Stones a casual fan ever needs are just a couple of compilation sets, no strings attached. Sure, there are underrated pieces by the greatest rock band ever (they're not my personal favorite band, but I think they're better than the Beatles, simply because they've lasted about 35 years longer AND are STILL selling out stadiums) but for the most part this and "Jump Back" are all you really need from these legendary musicians. I simply can't think of one person, let alone a ROCK fan, without some Rolling Stones in their iTunes library. Though I wish it were a bit cheaper, this album is essential for any rock fan's collection. Also get "Jump Back", another compilation, for some of the Stones's later hits. I think that one song's called "Start Me Up"? (by the way, that was sarcasm) REPORT CARD:A+ (I'm pro-compilation, because I think of the "casual fans")

By the time the Rolling Stones began calling themselves the World's Greatest Rock & Roll Band in the late '60s, they had already staked out an impressive claim on the title. As the self-consciously dangerous alternative to the bouncy Merseybeat of the Beatles in the British Invasion, the Stones had pioneered the gritty, hard-driving blues-based rock & roll that came to define hard rock. With his preening machismo and latent maliciousness, Mick Jagger became the prototypical rock frontman,...
