Under-estimated...Hotter Than July is essentially smooth

This album was be released during a period of little acclaim for Stevie, however, his genius cannot be denied when listening to this quintessential R&B/Soul album. Wonder has experimental rhythms sprinkled throughout; 'I Ain't Gonna Stand for It' is steeped in country music, 'Master Blaster' is infused with Bob Marley-esque reggae while 'Cash In Your Face', a socially concious number, is polished with funk vibes, and let's not pretend that James Brown did not influence 'Did I Hear You Say You Love Me'. But incapable of losing is essence, passion filled and soul baring love songs are plentiful. Tunes like 'All I Do' exemplify what it means to declare great love with refreshing simplicity. Anchoring the album are two songs that are still embraced like they're brand new in R&B circles even today. 'Happy Birthday', a tribute to MLK, has become a culturally loved alternative to liven up birthday celebrations of all kinds while 'Lately' has been covered by a number of young artists who want to show their range with Mr. Wonder's passion dripped lyrics and relatable storytelling. But nothing has proven better than the original. Hotter than July is as classic as any Stevie Wonder album to come before it, and must be in any Stevie Wonder collection to make it complete.

Hotter Than Any Month
