Album Review

In a recording that seems to begin well after the start of a service and to fade out before that service's conclusion, Smokie Norful devotes himself and a small army of associates to what he calls "old-school style" gospel, i.e., traditional gospel. "Anybody remember these kinds of songs?" he asks, introducing "Sunday Morning Medley," and it seems that many of his listeners do. The 12th District AME Mass Choir provides the choruses, as Norful introduces peers (Myron Butler, Sheri Jones-Moffett), protégés (Keshia McFarland), influences (Melvin Williams, Vanessa Bell Armstrong, Joe Ligon of the Mighty Clouds of Joy), and, eventually, his father, Pastor W.R. Norful, Sr., who sings a powerful "Amazing Grace." The younger Norful does not get lost among the guest stars, however. He remains both an expressive singer in his own right, and a loquacious speaker with an ability to connect to his listeners, whether he's reminiscing about traveling the country with his father trying to get his favorites on the tape deck; recalling the whippings he received "with love"; or raving about the redemptive power of the blood of Christ. This is an album aimed at older gospel fans who will find it easier to accept a younger voice like Norful's now that he has made apparent the tradition of which he is a part.

PRAISE GOD !!!!

Im trying to get ready and go for work but i might as well be in service, this album is so annointed. I done got my shout on, praise on connected with the song with him and his father, i can go on and on but please dont just buy this expecting a good musical album, but allow the spirit of god to truly visit you....HALLELUJAH !!!

Must Listen!!

This album is great! What a blessing it is for Pastor Smokie Norful to pay homage to his roots and those songs that he heard and played on Sunday morning as a child. In a world where gospel music is being globalized and adopting a pop sound, it is important to remember those soul stirring songs with power and anointing that kept us running to the altar in surrenderance! I know both his FATHERS are proud!

With his soulful tenor vocals and an unerring ability to fuse contemporary gospel with hip-hop sensibilities, Smokie Norful is one of the brightest lights on the current gospel scene. The son of an African Methodist Episcopal minister, Norful spent his first 14 years in Muskogee, OK, where he absorbed music ranging from sacred gospel to the secular soul that was popular at the time, and both strains would serve him well when he began his professional singing career. By the age of two he was picking...
