iTunes Review
Those into the minimal melancholy of 2008's Rising Down are in for more moody masterpieces with 2010's How I Got Over. The Roots' ninth studio album touches on more dark and heady subjects like loneliness, perseverance, self-abuse, war, and even aspects of existentialism. "Dear God 2.0" is riveting and beautiful with haunting elements provided by Monsters of Folk. Blu, P.O.R.N. and Dice Raw contribute to "Radio Daze," which is a little more buoyant thanks to some roomy, snare-heavy beats and a melodic hook in the chorus while Black Thought's ability to make complex phrasing move with a flowing cadence takes center stage. Things get a bit sunnier on "Now or Never" as both the tempos and melodies pick up a little. But you get a sense of why "How I Got Over" became the title-track from the first verse. It's overflowing with the classic tones of Philly soul, and not just in the instruments — Black Thought's heartfelt and controlled singing here reveals his best performance of the album, though he's upstaged by Joanna Newsom on the contagiously catchy "Right On."

Hip-Hop for a Mature Audience
I began listening to The Roots with Game Theory, working my way backwards through their catalog. With the arrival of this last album, I can now describe my experience with The Roots as akin to watching someone else's life flash before my eyes; the playfulness of Organix, the cohesiveness of Illadelph Halflife, the experimentation of Phrenology, the turn to the dark side in Game Theory, all culminating in a level of maturity that I have never heard in hip-hop. Although 99% of the genre have the ubiquitous "parental advisory" stamp of approval, they are not "mature" in the way that How I Got Over makes you feel like an old soul. As a child of the 80's and 90's, I am finally proud to know that the music of my generation is capable of something more.
(On a side note, I felt that 4 stars were appropriate given that the last two recordings, albeit bonus tracks, have a sort of "modernity" that disrupts the overall "classic" atmosphere of the album.)

this album is a classic so the question is why did i have to search for it? itunes please explain why this album is not on new releases stop sleeping!
Classic album.
The Roots have changed their sounds throughout the years. This album reminds me more of Things Fall Apart, which is one of the greatest hip-hop albums ever. It is just good from beginning to end. Most of the songs are very feel good. Classic ablum from The Roots. Wouldn't expect anything less. Buy this album!
