Album Review

Released in 2009, How to Train Your Dragon is British composer John Powell's third consecutive animation score, following Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs and Bolt. With his use of bagpipes, fiddles, pennywhistles, and a military marching band, Powell incorporates a Celtic theme throughout the 25 classical instrumentals and vocal pieces, which include the emotionally stirring "Test Drive," the new age-influenced "Forbidden Friendship," and "Sticks and Stones," a track recorded by Sigur Rós' frontman Jónsi. ~ Jon O'Brien, Rovi

One of Powell's Best

What a gloriously epic score from John Powell! I was hoping for great things, as Powell has done some of his best work for animation. Not only was I not disappointed, I was blown away. In my opinion, this is one of his best yet. It is fresh and energetic. The themes are big and memorable, the action is thrilling, the quieter sections are meltingly beautiful, and the orchestration is, as always, stellar. This is modern fantasy animation scoring at its best. Highly, highly recommended!

Fantastic!

Wow, what an amazing score: Epic, emotional, thrilling and powerful. It completely sweeps the listener into the fantasy landscape of the Vikings Vs. Dragons world. "Ready the Ships" is one of the best film tracks I've ever heard. I loved Powell's fun, diverse score for Horton Hears a Who, and this one is equally fantastic while painting a very different picture.

Absolutely Incredible

Being lucky enough to see an advanced screening of this incredible movie, I have absolutely fallen in love with the movie and the soundtrack. never before has a score moved me as much as this one does, it truly embodies the feel of the movie with its epic orchestra. my play count on Test Drive, Forbidden Friendship and Coming Back Around is ridiculous, yet its the only thing I am able to play right now. See this incredible movie that is so spectacular and bye this amazing soundtrack that will make you want to fly.
