iTunes Review

Originally released as two separate albums, these two magnificent works have been combined into one release, and what a monster it is. With his deep, growling voice, and dynamic harp and guitar playing, Wolf was a force of nature. Howlin' Wolf was the Wolf's debut for Chess Records, and it contains great Wolf sides including "Red Rooster," "Spoonful," and "Wang Dang Doodle." Moanin' In the Moonlight is an equally strong primer in the Wolf school of deep blues, containing more killer tracks, such as "Smokestack Lightning," "Evil," and "I Asked For Water (She Gave Me Gasoline)." If you've never heard Howlin' Wolf at full throttle, this is a great place to start. The man was a legend, and these sides show why.

Before Waits...There was Howlin' Wolf.

Anyone (or at least I) who knows and loves Tom Waits wonders is there a similar voice out there that is this amazing and incredible? Well, I believe that Howlin’ Wolf is the answer to this question. Wolf himself has quite possibly the most vicious blues voice I've heard. I encourage anyone with love of blues to pick this up and listen to this amazing voice. Simply put, this is a must in any and all blues record collections, Waits fans included.

Howlin' Wolf - Two for One

I discovered Chester Burnett (Howlin' Wolf) from the bottom up. The 1971 release of "London Sessions" is widely regarded as the Wolf's least authentic recording, with sidemen E. Clapton, S. Winwood, B. Wyman and C. Watts. The 61 yr old man was their hero and the boys made no secret of it. His voice blue me away. Now try to imagine the Wolf in his prime. If you're interested I suggest starting at the top; "Two for One". Download the whole album, crank it up and hang on.

Buy the REAL THING for the same price

First off this is a GREAT CD. There isn't a bad track on it. You can almost picture the studio where 'Wolf' was recording while listening to this. Great stuff. Second, I just bought this CD [case/liner notes/disc] tonight at Borders, for the same price they want on iTunes, $11.99. Why? Itunes is good for finding new artists, or sampling new music you haven't heard, but to charge the same price for a download with no case/artwork/disc is ridiculous. This may be a double album, but not a reason to charge more for it.

In the history of the blues, there has never been anyone quite like the Howlin' Wolf. Six foot three and close to 300 pounds in his salad days, the Wolf was the primal force of the music spun out to its ultimate conclusion. A Robert Johnson may have possessed more lyrical insight, a Muddy Waters more dignity, and a B.B. King certainly more technical expertise, but no one could match...
