Album Review

Human Frailty is the sound of a band running on all cylinders. Though Hunters & Collectors had trouble melding their influences (funk, tribal rhythms, melodic hooks) into a cohesive sound in the past, on this 1986 album the band finally discovered their true strength; a balance of bass and drum-driven grooves set below punchy horns and counterpoint melody lines. "Is There Anybody in There?" is a particular standout with its unrelenting rhythm section. The band uses their three-piece horn section to great effectiveness on "Everything's on Fire" and the loping, lazy swing of "Relief." Human Frailty is anything but and remains a great album to begin an association with the band's music.

Sentimental Favorite...with a punch.

This was a seminal album for me in my younger years. The gritty, sensual sound kept me rapt for hours on end. I have truly missed this album and am extremely happy ITunes has added it to it's catalog. For it's time, there was nothing like it. Way ahead of the day of grunge, and sort of bridged grunge and new wave. This is my opinion. In any case and any classification, it is a great album, and never received it's due in the US like it should have.

New Discoveries

I was first introduced to H&C in the 80's when a friend of mine sent me some cassette tapes from a college radio station in Milwaukee, Wi... WMSE. On one of the tapes, I heard this wickedly cool offbeat song, the likes of which I never heard before. I didn't know what to make of the song or the group, but it had a catchy rhythm that just stayed in my head for years. That song is #3 on this album - Dog. Despite searching publishing catalogs in record stores and talking with clerks, no one had heard of this group here in Florida, and for 20 years, this was the only song I knew the group by. Recently I ran across this album in iTunes, when on a lark I did a search on H&C. Having downloaded the album, I was more than blown away by the diversity of sound and style. I don't even know how to classify the genre of music contained on this album other than to say it's just unbelievably cool. That from someone whose musical tastes range from The Smiths, Berlin, Echo & The Bunnymen and Seal, to Metallica, U2, RATM, and Jayne's Addiction. I don't know where exactly this album fits in the mix, but it instantly became one of my favorites. If you like the samples, you'll LOVE the album.

Hunters and Collectors

I have a live track of Eddie Vedder singing a song called "throw your arms around me". Its a great version of a simple but great song. In searching for the writer, i come across Hunters & Collectors. I am now buying the Human Frailty album at a great price! Thanks Itunes!! $5.99
This seems like a really great album from a time when I grew up, somehow missing this completely. Truly a album of its time, it seems to transcend its era. Great rhythms, lyrics and a classic 80's funk-alt sound that clearly never got the attention it deserves. I'll add more if and when it has had some time in my collection.
