iTunes Review

Erin McKeown showed off her range with covers of tunes from the ‘30s and ‘40s and her own songwriting has expanded to include instrumentation and stylistic shifts unusual for a singer-songwriter. But McKeown understands that great music isn’t just style but a perfect merger of music and words. With a voice that can sing what it pleases, McKeown chooses to point up the melodies with a bright, compact punch. Hundreds of Lions features bright, shiny pop songs that belong to their own time. “Santa Cruz” begins with the sparsest of arrangements, instruments dancing around one another, until the instrumental break when everything comes together with great force before slinking back for the final verse and re-emerging for the final chorus. This tight grip on the arrangements makes for plenty of fun, from the stop-and-start chamber pop of “(Put the Fun Back In) The Funeral,” to the bossanova beat of “All That Time You Missed,” to the handclaps of “The Rascal,” to the simple acoustic pleas of “You, Sailor,” to the near-silent backing of “Seamless.”

Hundreds of Lions is the best album by Erin Mckeown so far. In this album, there's a lot more orchestration and a nice variety in the songs. If you're not familiar with her music, I would describe it as a blend of Alternative Rock, Folk, and Retro. Basically, it's pretty unique. My favorite songs include The Boats, The Rascal, and The Lions. I highly recommend all three of them.
If you're feeling daring, try (Put the Fun Back in) The Funeral. If you like McKeown's We Will Become Like Birds album, try Santa Cruz or Minneapolis, they have a very similar feel. For the folk lover, try The Rascal, but don't blame me if it get's stuck in your head for hours. Speaking of songs that get stuck in your head, The Foxes and To a Hammer are two other upbeat songs that risk getting trapped in your brain. I have to say my least favorite song is Seamless. It's not bad, I just couldn't get into it. Even then, I think my biggest complaint with the album is I don't like the cover art, and let's face it, with music this good, who cares about the package?
