iTunes Review

Childhood dreams and adult visions swirl through singer/songwriter Jesca Hoop’s sophomore album Hunting My Dress. Hoop creates a fascinating lyric mythology filled with shape-shifting creatures, primal landscapes and ethereal lovers, wrapping them in folk-based melodies fleshed out by quirky avant-pop arrangements. The album’s heady sonic brew recalls the spacey theatrics of Kate Bush at times, especially on “Whispering Light” and “Feast of the Heart.” More typically, Hoop shows an affinity for traditional English and Appalachian balladry, spinning moody, slightly surreal narratives in “Tulip” and “Murder of Birds.” The rattletrap rhythms of “Four Dreams” are balanced by the subdued, impressionistic tones of “The Kingdom” and “Angel Mom.” Hunting My Dress concludes with the haunting title song, a bittersweet mixture of hallucination and desire. Hoop’s seductive vocals and nimble acoustic guitar work give the album an intimate focus. Intensely personal yet inviting, Hunting My Dress is a major advance by this emerging artist.

Glowing haunted fog over ancient dark waters

Ms. Hoop cracks out powerfully immersive sculptures of song textured in artifacts and traditions that encompass a such a width and breadth of geography and time that listening to her feels like getting a tour of the world from the ghosts that visited scrooge in a Christmas Carol, except the lives with the starring roles aren't individual characters but forgotten civilizations wrapped in a ribbon of modern grins of chesire cats. This is music, but the world music barely contains it.

Hunting My Dress

I've been listening to this album on NPR's website for a week now. It's gorgeous. I've been playing it over and over, and it just gets better each time I hear it. It's haunting and timeless, and it will be the soundtrack for any moment you choose. I hate that I'm just now finding out about Jesca Hoop.

Hunting

I first came across Jesca Hoop by accident about a year and a half ago and fell in love with her music. When this new album came out I downloaded it as soon as possible. My first take was "Hey its very good" but the more I listen to it, the better and better it gets. All I can say now is It Is Great !

Biography

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s, '10s

A sensual, esoteric singer/songwriter whose odd, sparse songs nod to influences like Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell, and Vashti Bunyan, Jesca Hoop got her big break thanks to her gig as a nanny for Tom Waits' offspring in the early 2000s. Hoop had grown up in a musically inclined Mormon family, but left the fold soon after her parents separated. She traveled around California, Wyoming, and Arizona writing songs and honing her craft before settling down with the Waits family for five years as their nanny....
