Album Review
On his first compilation album as a solo act (and first self-titled album no less), Japanese rocker Hyde shows off his biggest and best hits aside from L'Arc-en-Ciel pieces. The sound is distinctly non-Japanese in its composition, taking strongly from Stone Temple Pilots in the first few pieces, with minor notes of Godsmack's Sully Erna embedded in Hyde's sound. At the same time, however, there's simplicity in the progression of chords and sound structures. Even though the sound is original to Japanese rock, the overt earnestness in the vocals belies someone seemingly trying too hard. Hyde wants desperately to sound like Scott Weiland, to sound like Chris Cornell, to sound like stereotypical angst-ridden American rock from the early portion of the 2000s. After the initial Stone Temple Pilots sound that the album opens with, by the fourth track, "Jesus Christ," Hyde is reaching for a fusion of Chris Cornell's Audioslave work and something verging on Evanescence's Amy Lee. When the string introductions start up in "Shining Over You," it's a sign that Hyde's crooning is only going to get more plaintive, more warble-laden, and it's a style that takes some getting used to in the Japanese realm. Minor chords are plentiful and vulnerability in the vocals seems to be more act than authentic — and that is much the course of Hyde's solo work at large. The compilation puts Hyde in his best light, but with its mix of melodrama and overly stereotypical compositions, it will still be an acquired taste for many.

Hyde
Hyde is amazing! Really, you don't have to be a huge fan of J-rock or J-pop to love his music! Hyde is also in L'Arc~en~Ciel and VAMPS, so check those two out as well! This album has a variety of songs of his from different albums. It has really great songs on it and definitely a great buy if you just started listening to Hyde and just want to get a taste of his music.
Finally!
I've been waiting for Hyde to be put on here. In case you don't know, he's from L'arc-en-ciel and his new band Vamps. He has a pretty strong voice and even though this is J-rock, he has a very Western sound to his songs. A good portion of his sounds are in English as well. This album seems to be a compilation of some of songs from his three albums Roentgen, 666 and Faith. At this price, for this many songs, it's a definite buy, considering how much some of his albums cost on their own.
Dear Adam Greenberg
Thank you for taking this album at face value and reviewing something that was clearly a forced assignment. To say that Hyde is merely imitating early 2000s rock music is a little ignorant. He has been successfully making music with his second band, L'Arc~en~Ciel, since 1993, and released his three solo albums (of which this is a compilation) between 2002-2006. So, no real surprise that the music has an "early 2000s" feel to it. To say he's trying to copy Scott Weiland and Chris Cornell is a little ridiculous because he's never listed either of them as influences, and suggests you've never actually heard a Soundgarden album before. Your opinion of forced, faked, and overwrought vocals is just that...an opinion. Probably based on annoyance that you had to listen to the album. Some opinions find his vocals to be emotional and inspiring in the same vein as Dave Grohl and Matt Bellamy. In fact, this album isn't even a collection of the best of his songs..."Dolly" being one of the greatest rock anthems (about clones) ever written. I'll admit that his latest incarnation as the lead singer of VAMPS' first album was less than inspired, but the second album recently released has shown a vast improvement. I don't think Hyde's music is so much an acquired taste as it is that most Americans are reluctant (read unwilling) to listen to anything not sung in English.
