iTunes Review

A short but strong EP meant to tide the fans over until the release of his next album King Kong, I Am Atlanta 3 finds Zoe continuing to expand his status as one of the most popular and prolific artists from the bustling ATL scene. As per usual, he focuses exclusively on balling, (giving props to snail meat and being sick of cars, so he bought a boat), taking aim at jealous haters, and partying the club. Typical Dirty South production is provided by Sonny Digital and Sweat Da Trac, among others, who contribute a barrage of skittering beats, high-drama synth lines, and megaton-sized bass bumps to support Zoe's unique rhyme scheme ("Call me Uncle Tom / Tom Brokaw / like Uncle Sam / I'm tryna get broke off"). Though it would be easy to dismiss many of his tracks as formulaic, chant-by-numbers hustler/party rap, the fact is that his formula works; he knows his strengths and wisely steers clear of trying to get too deep with the lyrics. His devoted fanbase is proof positive, eating up his rambunctious club bangers just as fast as he can put them out. Key selections here include "Up On a Pole" and "We Should Have Sex."

Gorilla Zoe's first taste of commercial success came with "Coffee Shop," a 2007 hit by Bad Boy labelmate Yung Joc. His debut single as a solo artist, "Hood N***a," followed shortly thereafter, along with the accompanying debut album Welcome to the...
