Interesting and Catchy

I don't know who "Danny and the Dirtbags" are, but these songs are strangely addicting. And oddly great! The more times I listen to the entire work the more I like it. Maybe it's that a lot of the tracks have a a "retro" element that ranges from blatant to more subtle. But they have a modern take--this is not "canned" remakes with superficial variations. The songs induced a tinge of nostalgia in me. Maybe Buddy Holly really ISN'T dead; he's surreptitiously working as a supermarket manager in Smalltown, USA, collaborating on new songs with Frank Zappa on the cash register. "Dirty Girl on Facebook" is the most parodic of the songs, but many of the tunes have a distinctly playful, comedic twist. It's an interesting and intriguing combination. "Sitting On a Stool at Finnegan's" is immensely "catchy": you'll be singing along by the third chorus. "Misery" --full of lament--will make you feel like you are missing a sock hop somewhere--one that your girlfriend is attending with a male model named "Chad." "Everything Is True", a charming duet, is pure and melodic. The rest of the tracks are equally as good.

The listener gets the strange feeling that there is something more going on here than meets the eye. As if there is a story being told that we are not yet "getting." Now if I could just figure out what the story is. If I ever do, I bet it will be worth it. The musical arrangements have everything that makes memorable music great: simplicity and originality (yes, despite the "retro-ness"). Think "Neil Young" simplicity. The musicianship and vocals are generally outstanding. The production is clean and not overdone, in keeping with the "old school" genre--good choice. Now what the hell are these Dirtbags up to here?

I Am Stu Pitt

I don't think I've ever heard a CD quite like I Am Stu Pitt before. I find the mixture of funny, socially hip and ROCKING very unique...and good clean fun! The lyrics are hilarious, clever and sincere all at once, as depicted in Kyle Got Beat Up By A Male Ballerina and You Know It Baby. The two love songs on the CD are as solid as they come in Everything Is True and my personal favorite, Don't Know What To Say. By the time you listen to The Mad Bread Squeezer, your sides will ache and you'll be hooked on Danny & The Dirtbags.

The vocals are as impressive as they are varied. These Dirtbags can sing...and play! The guitars are kicking it throughout all the tracks! Overall, I am Stu Pitt, by Danny & The Dirtbags is a pleasant and rewarding find!!! It's like bumping into an old friend at the grocery store, but they've had a complete makeover...and they're now smoking hot...and MUCH funnier than you remember! A "must own"!
