Album Review

The Portland trio that comprises Menomena calls its first album I Am the Fun Blame Monster!, which is an anagram for "the first Menomena album." That kind of joke is typical of a band that packages the disc in a flipbook showing them performing on drums, bass, and piano and that reveals in their press materials that the album was largely produced with a self-written computer program, after which they learned to play its songs live. Cut through all this traffic, and the music itself is still laden with primitive effects. Menomena loves to have its vocals filtered through a nearly impenetrable screen of noise, loves to begin a musical figure on keyboards or guitar, repeat it over and over, then suddenly cut it off and move on to something else. The piano/bass/drum combination sometimes recalls Ben Folds Five, but the melodies and lyrics are never given much of a chance to develop, or even be heard for long in the self-conscious gimmickry of the deliberately harsh production. Menomena clearly thinks of itself as a clever bunch of musicians. Maybe next time around they'll be more interested in sharing their wit with their listeners rather than just alluding to it. For a debut album, I Am the Fun Blame Monster! is surprisingly sophomoric.

I Just Couldn't Diasagree Any More

I'm not going to spend a lot of time on this, because I just don't have any to spare right now, but the fact that the 'official' reviewer pulled a 'Ben Folds Five' reference out of the ether when discussing 'I Am The Fun Blame Monster' indicates that perhaps he/she does not have the musical experience one needs in order to discuss this band. Or maybe Menomena was mean to him/her when they were in his/her home town. In any event, this is a set of great musical experiments that absurdly reflect the more fidelity twisted hip-hop scientists and the 'concrete' Pere Ubu types of influence than any other things I can think of, and these are poor comparisons to say the least. Honestly, risk 99 cents on 'Cough Coughing,' and then visit what may be one of the most self destructive websites (menomena.com) ever created by a rock group to see the video. These guys will make you want to start a band, they make it seem really fun.

the review to the left is not to be trusted

it's just not true. who wrote that?! what gives them the right!? it sounds like a half assed book report... for a book they didn't read menomena is one of the most wildly orginal bands making music today. google other reviews listen to the music judge for yourself -devoted menomena fan

Why is this iTunes reviewer so angry?...

This iTunes reviewer frightens me. You know what you should do? I'll tell you. You should first completely erase the nasty comments from your memory, then listen to the music previews. They speak for themselves. If you are still interested, buy this album. You will not be disappointed. - The album cover and booklet design = fun / creative / original - The music = fun / creative / original / bold / refreshing - iTunes Reviewer = incorrect / angry / alone

Biography

Formed: Portland, OR

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Portland, OR-based experimental rock group Menomena is a trio that consists of multi-instrumentalists Justin Harris, Brent Knopf, and Danny Seim. They assembled much of their debut album, I Am the Fun Blame Monster!, by using a computer program dubbed Deeler and developed by Knopf. The album's unusual packaging was in the form of a flipbook depicting the bandmembers performing. Menomena released it themselves on a very limited basis in 2003, then signed to the Portland independent label FILMguerrero...
