iTunes Review

Alt-country underground darlings the Avett Brothers take the major label leap with I and Love and You and deliver something both unexpected and impressive. The most noticeable change is that most of the songs are ballads and the piano is the prominent instrument here while the banjo, up to now such an integral part of their sound, only appears sporadically. In fact, the only time banjo is front and center is on the bluegrass “January Wedding” and the hootenanny flourish at the end of “Laundry Room.” Though tempos pick up on “Kick Drum Heart,” “Tin Man,” and “Slight Figure of Speech” they are the exceptions. The overall effect is less visceral and direct in some ways than their previous material yet the sophisticated arrangements carry an emotional weight and sonic richness of their own. The Avett Brother’s love of Appalachian mountain music is still evident, especially in the beautiful harmony singing by brothers Seth and Scott; they just convey it in a different and less predictable way. This shift may not please all of their fans but it’s hard to argue when the results are this gorgeous.

Why Fight It?

Every once in a while a band comes along that is impossible to resist...
If you don't believe me, take a listen to this album. No matter what type of music you listen to, there is an undeniable energy at the heart of all these tracks. Open your mind, turn it up loud and let it wash over you...

The most impressive thing about this band is that they can do it all... I know I am gushing, but I am constantly buying albums looking for what this one nails. Growing up, we all allow our innocent ears to hear music for what it is, devoid of pretense. I beg you, try and do that with this album... it will take you to a different place.

I have every album by the Avetts (yes, I admit my bias) and their earlier work has some rough edges... still, that raw energy exists at the heart of their tunes. As they evolved as a band, much like the Beatles, their talent began to distinguish them from the rest of the crowd. They have always been able to write a sincere tune... However, once "Four Thieves Gone" dropped they entered a new realm.

Now with Rick Rubin pushing their boundaries yet again, they deilver their most consistently impressive disc... Not a throwaway in the bunch. They know how to make you sing at the top of your lungs, they know how to break your heart as you drive alone at night, and most of all... they have that certain undefinable something that bands are only lucky enough to harness every once in a great while.
Without fear of overstatement, this group is the syntheisis of everything before it. Not quite country, not quite rock, not exactly bluegrass... just a** kicking songs meant to punch you in the mouth...

This is the only type of music worth writing... a band screaming their heads off, declaring themselves, standing naked... not giving a crap what you think or how you categorize them. White, black, city, country, 16 to 60... this music is for everyone. Why? Simple... they have a knack for firmly grasping what exists at the core of human experience and making something visceral and tangible out of the things we can't expalin. Get pissed, kick it around, pick it back up and love it for what it is... that is what the Avett's do.

Shouldn't we all... ?

It sounds......different

The album is good, not great. 'I and Love and You', 'Kick Drum Heart', 'Tin Man', and 'Laundry Room' are all good and catchy songs, but I know I'm not alone in my concern for the direction the band is taking. Emotionalism provided the first glimpse at the pop sound the band seems to be heading towards, and both Gleams continued to distance the band from what makes them so special - the raw energy and unrefined vocals and instrumentalism. I'll keep listening, but I'm somewhat disappointed. Opening for Dave Matthews Band? Really? Come on guys, you're better than that.

decide what to be and go be it

Probably the best album you could buy on iTunes... but if you have not seen them live... make that your goal this year. You may love the recorded, dressed up Avetts, but just WAIT til you see them at their best- ragged and wailing and stompin and screamin and jumping. Best live show. Needless to say, this album I have been waiting on for months on end. BUY it. You will not regret it. Just be ready to be brought to your knees. Feel what its like to be human again. most notable- Head Full of Doubt, I and Love and You, Ten Thousand Words, Laundry Room, January wedding.... actually all are notable... there is nothing like them anywhere.

Biography

Formed: 2000 in Concord, NC

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s, '10s

The Avett Brothers' music has roots in traditional folk and bluegrass, but also captures the high spirits and no-boundaries attitude of rock & roll — which is appropriate, since rock is where Scott Avett and Seth Avett first cut their teeth as musicians. Although siblings Scott (vocals, banjo) and Seth (vocals, guitar) began making music together as children, their group's genesis began when they were members of Nemo, a rock band that gigged regularly in Greenville, NC.
