Twenty-two year old, Brunswick, Maine-bred Luke Rathborne is a young performer with massive talent. His two 2011 EPs, Dog Years and I Can Be One are solid expositions of his intense songwriting capabilities. Members of Antony and the Johnsons add backing to many of the tunes here and it’s an agreeable marriage. “I Can Be One” has the fragility of Neil Young. The piano sounds like it’s about to be crushed under its own weight and the strings create a sweet relief. “Motor City” removes Rathborne’s trademark rasp for a smooth Alex Chilton-Big Star-era vocal. There are no false moves here: Just honest musicianship that makes one think of men like Tom Waits, Alex Chilton and Nikki Sudden, in terms of spiritual kinship. Here’s to a long and fruitful career.

If you don't have this record in your pile you are missing something great. Luke has mystery a baby face and neolithic wisdom. He is bona fide 100% all the time everywhere NOW. Buy this.
