iTunes Review

Back in 1996, California producer DJ Shadow dropped his breakout album Endtroducing... to universal acclaim around the world. His heavily layered, sample-laden soundscapes inspired a whole generation of bedroom beatmakers, helped spark the short-lived “turntablist” movement, and made aspiring crate diggers out of kids everywhere. His next studio album The Private Press followed much of the same template, though his following release The Outsider took some fans by surprise because of its seemingly oddball collaborations and experimentations with the budding Hyphy sound. Prefacing his upcoming album The Less You Know The Better, I Gotta Rokk finds Shadow back in hyper-sample mode, with the hard-hitting, guitar-laced title track plus "Def Surrounds Us" and "I've Been Trying," two singles from 2010, and remixes for all three of them.

Customer Reviews

2004 DJ Shadow would be ashamed of this.

Shadow is so much better than this. What happened to the guy who liked breaks. C'mon Son!!! Don't listen to these hipster d-bags, go back to make the music that made you who you are. I'm sorry but this album sounds like crap in a side by side comparison with Introducing.

This just kills - great preview for the new album!

"I Gotta Rokk" is fierce, propulsive rocktronica, and is a welcome return for DJ Shadow. It blasts distorted guitar from both channels on top of a pounding beat and creates the feeling of anthemic 80's hair metal in a modern context. I also loved the melancholy acoustic guitar chording on "I've Been Trying" and the apocalyptic vibes on the drum 'n' bass driven "Def Surrounds Us." The remixes are halfway decent, but it's Shadow's creativity and renewed dynamics that make this worthwhile. If this is a preview of what the vibes will be on his forthcoming LP, then there's a lot to look forward to!

Different But Good

Not what DJ Shadow purists are looking for, but nothing is. Kind of a rock version of Celestial Annihilation from Shadow's UNKLE album.

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

DJ Shadow's Josh Davis is widely credited as a key figure in developing the experimental instrumental hip-hop style associated with the London-based Mo' Wax label. His early singles for the label, including "In/Flux" and "Lost and Found (S.F.L.)," were all-over-the-map mini-masterpieces combining elements of funk, rock, hip-hop, ambient, jazz, soul, and used-bin finds. Although he'd already done a scattering of original and production work (during 1991-1992 for Hollywood Records) by the time Mo'...
