Album Review
The second Impulse! session for ballad singer Johnny Hartman followed his classic collaboration with John Coltrane. Hartman is heard in peak form throughout these 11 pieces, which include "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning," "Sleepin' Bee," "Stairway to the Stars," and even "Charade." Tenor saxophonist Illinois Jacquet is on five of the songs, guitarists Kenny Burrell and Jim Hall help out on a few tunes, and Hartman is consistently accompanied by pianist Hank Jones, bassist Milt Hinton, and drummer Elvin Jones. This is one of his finest recordings.
Customer Reviews
John Coltrane's Favorite Singer
Johnny is one of the greatest singers of all time, and easily the equal of any male singer of the century. That he didn't record often isn't his fault; what he did record is flawless. His John Coltrane with Johnny Hartman album is one of the greatest vocal albums ever made, and this one is just as good. Every thing Johnny recorded is impecably swinging and his phrasing and tone are gorgeous. The 11 songs here are all classics, beautifully sung by Johnnny.
Classic!!
Check out the man that Sinatra said was one of the most underrated singers of his time!!!
Fantastic album
One of Johnny Hartman's greatest. The lineup is superb. Illinois Jacquet and Kenny Burrell frquently played together in the fantastic period of the NY scene in the 50's and early 60's. That disappeared a few years later. Elvin is sensitive. Make this date.
