Album Review

Combustible Edison's goofy and irreverent mix owes a lot more to the music of the 1950s and early '60s than to new wave; they sound as if they've stumbled on a treasure trove of dime-store albums in their aunt's attic and can't quite get over the experience. Their immaculate recreation of late-'50s/early-'60s cheese is fun...to a point. Treading the line between self-conscious irony and the ridiculous, it probably won't prove to be more durable than those old Christmas (the band, not the season) albums. But then, nobody could have predicted the Martin Denny revival, either.

pretty freakin coool

well i first heard of these dudes from the xbox spy vs spy game. They are kinda weird but at the same time really catchy and fun to listen to. If you have a open mind to music then this is a good album to have

C.E.: Worthy Bearers of the(Tiki)Torch

I think C.E. get somewhat of a bad rap; referenced more than played, the general line seems to be that they were a novelty band(which they were, but in the best sense, I feel)who basically copied or imitated a bunch of old records they found. Finally getting to hear their stuff after getting somewhat of a grounding in space-age pop(lounge, bachelor-pad, what-have-u), it seems to me that they were ahead of(or were)the curve in its resurgence, & carried the torch w/ considerable chops, imagination, versatility, resourcefulness & panache. The fact that they did this on Sub Pop, of all places, makes it all the more remarkable. Some of their homages are quite specific: "Cadillac," f'rinstance, is clearly a riff on The 3 Suns, & "The Veldt" is a slight variation on Martin Denny's "Quiet Village" cover, done in a manner somewhat analogous to Neil Innes's pastiches for The Rutles. But even cuts which sounded like filler to me on 1st listen(e.g., "Cry Me A River")engage me subsequently w/ the interesting twists & turns of the arrangements, & as a die-hard Weill/Brecht fan, I've heard many versions of "Surabaya Johnny," & feel that C.E.'s holds up w/ the best of them. Really, I think this whole album is worthwhile; haven't gotten "Schizophonic" yet, but certainly plan to...& "The Impossible World?" Well, that's a whole other story...

spy vs. spy

i love the game spy vs. spy as well as the comics and i think this music is catchy and fun to listen to.

Formed: 1994 in Providence, RI

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s

What to do if you've been slogging away in the rock underground for a decade to slight critical acclaim without making any appreciable artistic or commercial headway? In the mold of David Johansen/Buster Poindexter, the band Christmas decided to retool themselves as lounge lizards. On their debut album, the Providence, RI, group played cocktail jazz, exotica, torch ballads, and B-movie spy/guitar themes. To complete their transformation, the band adopted ice cream-colored tuxedoes in their live performances;...
