iTunes Review

Is Barry Manilow a sensitive balladeer or a consummate, crowd-rousing showman? He’s both, of course, and Ultimate Manilow offers a no-filler survey of the singer/songwriter’s Top 40 glory years, concentrating upon his mid-‘70s through early ‘80s output. What comes through here is the deep connection Barry has to the Broadway and vaudeville traditions of his native New York — the unabashed romanticism, boyish humor and twinges of pathos that run through these tracks goes all the way back to era of Berlin and Gershwin. From the aria-like “Mandy” through the classically-rooted “Could It Be Magic” and the anthemic “I Write the Songs,” Manilow stirred the emotions of millions. He occasionally made surprising song choices; the poignant “Ships,” for instance, was composed by glam-rocker Ian Hunter. “Copacabana” proved that he could shake off his lovelorn blues with a kinetic upbeat tune. The bittersweet “Somewhere Down the Road” found him scoring hits even as New Wave rock began to dominate the charts. The tunes in this collection remain classics of pop songcraft, served up with the affection and gusto that has made Manilow an enduring talent.

The Cream Of The Crop

This single cd was released before Arista was blended into Sony and it preceeds "The Essential Barry Manilow" two disc set. The 20 sides on this set are perfectly sequenced and well mastered. Compared to the remasters recently released this single set holds up a bit better soundwise. This cd is perfect for the fan looking for just the hits, "When October Goes" from Barry's jazz lp "2 A.M. Paradise Cafe" isn't live like the song listing suggests, the song was recorded "live" in the studio however, making the listing half right. The import version features the duet "Blue" recorded with Sarah Vaughn also from "2 A.M. Paradise Cafe" and features Barry's foray into techno-pop "You're Lookin' Hot Tonight" from his original "Greatest Hits Volume 2" lp released in 1984. Again for the absolute essential, it's here.

In terms of both record sales and career longevity, Barry Manilow is one of the most successful adult contemporary singers ever. That success hasn't necessarily translated to respect (or even ironic hipster appreciation) in most quarters; Manilow's music has been much maligned by critics and listeners...
