Album Review

Ice Pickin' is the album that brought Albert Collins directly back into the limelight, and for good reason, too. The record captures the wild, unrestrained side of his playing that had never quite been documented before. Though his singing doesn't quite have the fire or power of his playing, the album doesn't suffer at all because of that — he simply burns throughout the album. Ice Pickin' was his first release for Alligator Records and it set the pace for all the albums that followed. No matter how much he tried, Collins never completely regained the pure energy that made Ice Pickin' such a revelation.

Albert Collins is a Bad A**

Albert Collins may be one of the most underrated blues guitarists. In my opinion Collins is just as good a player as anyone that is out there or anyone that has ever played.

Blues for even the non-fan, "Ice Pickin'" rivals many classics of the genre from better-known artists stretching from B.B. King to Robert Cray. And none of them have ever sounded as funny as Albert when he relates the story of his wife's credit discovery in "Master Charge". Horns help balance the strong, lean guitar that rightfully dominates, and tracks like "Avalanche" are designed purely as a skills showcase, but Albert Collins doesn't come off a bit self-indulgent in this tight, fluent set. "Ice Pickin'" captures a pivotal studio moment as if it were a live performance, which is part of what extends the album's appeal beyond its core audience. Rock, pop, and soul enthusiasts have been groovin' to this one for decades, and it's easy to hear why it wins over new fans each time it resurfaces.

THE RECORD

This was the mega blues record when it was released. No denying that this is something special as it influenced every modern contempary blues artist such as Stevie Ray Jonny Lang John Mayer Doyle Bramhall II etc.

Albert Collins, "The Master of the Telecaster," "The Iceman," and "The Razor Blade" was robbed of his best years as a blues performer by a bout with liver cancer that ended with his premature death on November 24, 1993. He was just 61 years old. The highly influential, totally original Collins, like...
