Album Review

If you thought Kevin Barnes laid his soul out on the table for Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?, wait till you get a hold of that album's companion EP, Icons, Abstract Thee. This five-track release collects songs from the Hissing sessions that didn't make it onto the full-length (vinyl-only bonus cuts, MySpace downloads, and other orphans) and offers them up like addenda to the epic breakup saga chronicled on the former album. Where Hissing succeeded in cloaking most of the hurt in metaphor, Icons relates the rest of the story with bald-faced frankness. From a heartfelt apology to his baby daughter ("Miss Blonde Your Papa Is Failing") to the suicidal broodings of "No Conclusion," the disintegration of Barnes' marriage takes the center stage again — with the same bouncy, overblown, and jubilant songcrafting that tricked you into thinking Hissing was a "feel-good" album the first time you spun it. Lyrically dark, brooding, and self-defeating, Icons is anything but (as far as the music itself is concerned). Shut out the gloomy diary entries, and the EP shines as a catchy, summery, effervescent, day-driving soundtrack — full of DAW trickery and loopy fun — but if you follow along with the lyric sheet in hand, be prepared to feel a little tinge of guilt for snooping around in someone else's journal. ~ J. Customer Reviews

A much needed reminder

Hissing Fauna, though very good, was sorta gaudy. This EP is hopefully a taste of the next album. It's very intimate (much like Cherry Peel was) but with better sound quality, which I always appreciate. I can't believe someone actually judged them in the reviews for the Outback commerical. Is it really so terrible that a band would want to make money with their talent? As long as the music stays wonderful, I don't care how popular they get. The deserve it.

Bowie-esque

Of Montreal takes a much loved punk/frantic sound from the late 70's and early 80's and modernizes it perfectly. Bowie meets Lennon with a mix of funk. I imagine road trip adventures or beach parties- this is a great albulm for the hot summer months when new and cutting edge sounds can be showcased. Buy this one, add it to a party mix and cheers.

Going to sneak in early on this

This EP's only been out for half an hour, and it's the kind of EP that I immediately repeat the second it's done playing. If you're an of Montreal fan, this is a must have; continues the saga unfolded in Hissing Fauna. Each song on this EP is good enough to have been on the original album. "No Conclusion" is definitely a highlight and an absolute necessity for fans. Check it out, you won't be disappointed.
