Album Review

Taking their cue from dance-driven '80s bands like Depeche Mode and Duran Duran, London's White Rose Movement apes the best aspects of their predecessors, reveling in edgy dance-punk riffs and swaggering vocals laced with gyrating synth beats. Unlike their peers in Franz Ferdinand, the Rakes, and Bloc Party, however, White Rose Movement's debut never really found ground in the States despite its arguably better quality of songs. U.K. singles "Girls in the Back," a sharp, speedy number with a hooky chorus, and "Love Is a Number," a layered, synth-based track with echoing vocals, is immediately memorable, reverberating with more attitude than all the previously mentioned bands put together. "Cruella" is the album's real standout, buried at the end of the disc, and led by an aggressive, propulsive beat and singer Finn Vine's strutting hoot as he hollers about the notorious 101 Dalmatians villain. It's regrettable that no U.S. labels picked up on White Rose Movement before they were lost in the shuffle of British '80s revival bands, particularly after they played several festivals in the States supporting this album, but with any luck their next release won't suffer the same fate.

Return of the good.

What little I have heard of this band so far, I like. I sampled the song Girls In The Back" and really thought it was amazing. I purchased the 4 song single they released of "Girls In the Back" and can't stop listening to it. If you are a fan of New Order, new and old, you will be pleased with this album. It reminds me a lot of New Order in the Low-Life days, and a bit of the modern "Waiting for the Sirens Call" style. If your not in to the 80's, or New Order, then have no fear, White Rose Movement has a very modern sound simlar to Franz Ferdinand whith an electronic tinge. If you don't like much of the album then I would recomend you at least download "Girls In the Back" and maybe check out "Lodon's Mine."

Get yo Groove Did!

If your looking for metal or emo, your looking in the wrong place, this band falls under Dance or New wave more-so. Best track is definatly SPEED, Girls in the Back, and Love is a Number. We all know they sound like Duran Duran, New Order, and Howard Jones. But thats part of the fun, isn't it?

I'm really likin this! Somethin new, somethin old, somethin borrowed, etc

I only recently discovered this band and am loving this cd. In some ways, they are definitely a throwback to early 80s music (a la Cure), but there's something more. Even though the music is a bit derivative on certain levels, they certainly add their own creativity and flair, which makes it unique and completely their own. It's a burst of fresh air from the cookie cutter, corporate controlled crap bands of today. My fave listens on the cd are Girls in the Back, Pig Heil Jam and Love Is a Number. Pick up the cd, you won't be disappointed.
