Album Review

Edwin Starr was at the height of his creative powers in the 1960s and early to mid-1970s, when he did much of his best work for Motown. Released in late 1998, this CD spans 1965-1974 and boasts many of his essential Motown hits. Starr was very much a product of Northern soul, and yet, he sometimes showed an awareness of the sweaty, rough-and-tumble soul that Stax Records was recording down in Memphis. "If My Heart Could Tell the Story," "Stop Her On Sight (S.O.S.)," and "I'm Still a Struggling Man" are pure Detroit; the sweetness and honey-coated harmonies that defined a lot of Motor City and Northern R&B are very much a part of these classics. But Starr's tougher side asserts itself on "25 Miles" and the angry protest song "War," both of which demonstrate that when he wanted, Starr could be every bit as gritty as Memphis shouters like Otis Redding and Sam Moore. If you're seeking an introduction to Starr's talents, this disc would be the best choice by far.

Great Song

First heard this song in "Adventures in Babysitting", the movie. Still Love it! (Great Movie too)

Despite it being on Rush Hour...

The song War does have alot of meaning to it. I'll even admit that the only reason I heard about this song was Rush Hour. But it's still a good song and it has some meaning to it.

That's Fresh Son!

Ah Shnaps son! This is such an underrated album and artist. All you chumps out there who have never given credit to this man should all be chumped out right now. I dont know who you chumps are but ya'll aint got NOTHING! Edwin Starr should have had more hits than just WAR. Don't get me wrong, its a great song, but there are some other Fresh songs on this album alone, that should be hits. But you chumps wouldn't know that unless it wasn't for yours truely, Chumb Bucket. And welcome to the Chumb Bucket lounge by the way. Anyways, that's my take on this Incredible, underrated, and Fresh artist. Edwin Starr is not a CHUMP!

Rightly revered for the storming protest classic "War," Edwin Starr didn't really need another hit to achieve legendary status in soul circles, so electrifying was that single performance. Starr first made his name as "Agent Double-O-Soul," and when his contract was transferred to Motown, he instantly became one of the roughest, toughest vocalists on the crossover-friendly label, with his debt to James Brown and the Stax soul shouters. Even if nothing else ever matched the phenomenon...
