iTunes Review
After two stellar full-lengths of wintery urban ennui The Walkmen have finally struck out for the countryside with the aptly titled A Hundred Miles Off, trading the emetic if captivating angularity of their earlier work for a more robust sound. If Everyone Who Pretended to Like Me Is Gone and Bows and Arrows presented The Walkmen as young exiles fleeing across ice-slicked fire escapes, then A Hundred Miles Off sees them granted asylum in some bucolic protectorate. The Walkmen’s sense of shimmering dislocation remains, but their “all or nothing” urgency has been replaced by a vague sense of lazy unease. “Louisiana”, A Hundred Miles Off’s melancholic opener, wastes no time in announcing their change in direction with a slow wash of bent guitar strings and a languid bayou tempo that owes a great deal to the Americana-tinged fantasies that Bob Dylan and The Band were cooking up in the summer of 1967. By backing off from the hypnotic two-chord strum of their earlier work The Walkmen have created a unique and affecting record imbued with an adventurous spirit that can only bode well for the group’s future work.

Another Great One
All I can tell you is this, The Walkmen are a terrific band. They have a very unique sound, if you don't care for whiny vocals and organ you probably should avoid this. But that would mean you should also burn your Dylan collection and keep away from church and that's just not reasonable. This CD is so good I wouldn't doubt that listening to it might actually add years to your life. The leadsingers name is Hamilton Leithauser which is worth the price of admission alone. Plus I can tell you first hand, he's very gracious to fans that spout out idiocies like "I'm a really big fan".
Big walkmen fan but you fooling yourself if you think this is great!
I love the walkmen and there first 2 cd's have turned them into one of my top three music groups of all time. The first two LP's honestly had better sounding piano to each song that flowed perfect. This new cd is pretty disappointing to me since there isnt one song that strikes me as great. Yes Lost in Boston has some talent but the song is to short to enjoy it all, they should have made a second chorus to that song. "Always after you" would be the best all around musical song that I enjoy besides "another one goes by" which is a great closer song. Honestly I wish this album was more like the last long on it instead of sounding so undergroundish. From what I've heard they are working on new songs already, obviously they werent completely happy with this effort as well because most music groups dont think about recording after just recording a full LP. This cd had good intentions but went south somewhere on the way. I am so sorry that I have to be honest and put this cd down but its the truth and hopefully die hard fanes who have listened to it like me, seven times now, will see this cd has a lot of room for big improvement. Sorry Walkmen, the rat, weve been had, and blizzard of 96 kick big booty compared to anything on this cd. How could you forget to make the piano flow with each song! Keep trying, you have the talent!!!
Middle Ground.
The Walkmen have found some middle ground. The album is not as hard as Bows + Arrows but not as light as Everyone Who Pretended to Like Me Is Gone. They have turned down the noise and distortion to get a cleaner and more soulful sound. Hamilton Leithauser’s is very close to sounding Dylanish while sustaining his own identity. Fantastic album that gets better each time you listen.
