Album Review

Produced by iconic boardsman Gil Norton, Ten Songs in the Key of Betrayal is a kickass rock & roll record in the vein of classics by the likes of the Replacements, Weezer and Urge Overkill. Riffs rip, snares crack and hooks pull the unsuspecting in via tracks like "Forever Is Rock N' Roll" — a malt liquor-drenched homage to living life to its fullest — and "The Hustla Life." But the West Coast quartet's thump and bump charge should come as little surprise to fans of the long-lost punk-pop troupe the Meices, who already know what a three-chord visionary like Joe Reineke can do. At their worst, Alien Crime Syndicate is a top-notch, disposable pop band — as the Fountains of Wayne-like "Back Together" attests — but when they hit their marks, as they do on the sugary romp "The American Way" (which extols the virtues of "chicks with juicy lips" in the U.S.A.), ACS is as immediate as it is fun. Interesting

I was initially attracted to this band because of it's name, but I stayed for the strange rhythems and whispy (in a good way) feel. They're certainly no smashing pumpkins, but they do have a cool sound and that's something very notable. Frankly I don't find the vocals appealing, but other than that I highly recomend buying this album, I did.

A fair assortment of music...

There's nothing REALLY special about this band, but good guitar riffs and some good power chords on the choruses make this music fun to listen to. It might grate on you after a while.

A crime against humanity

The first time I saw this band was in Spokane, Washington, opening for the Pixies on the first leg of their recent reunion tour. What can I say? I was blown away. Not only was the music the worst I've ever heard live, their ridiculous rock star posing was was borderline atrocious. Vomit atrocious. Gouge my eyes atrocious. But, in fairness, I wanted to check out their studio production, see if I missed something. I'm sad to report, its even worse. I'm sorry ACS, it gives me no pleasure to say this: if you write a song with the words 'Rock'n'Roll" in the title, you neither rock, or roll. Seriously, ACS, we submit. Just put the put the guitar down. Seriously.

Alien Crime Syndicate formed in San Francisco after the collapse of singer/guitarist Joe Reineke's Meices in 1997. Adding drummer Nabil Ayers, bassist Jeff Rouse, and guitarist Mike Squires, the band moved to Los Angeles and managed to score a major-label record deal by the summer. In 1998, the band was dropped immediately before the album was released, leading them to relocate to Seattle where they regrouped and gained some valuable live experience.
