iTunes Review

Cansei de ser Sexy (Portuguese for “tired of being sexy”) have come a long way since leaving their Sao Paolo art school/dance club roots, and the five girl/one guy Brazilian band seem to be having too fun much to worry about anything as mundane as pop world domination. Seattle’s Sub Pop label shrewdly swapped out four of the original Brazilian release’s Portuguese-language tracks, but the album’s core remains an often loopy mash-up of electro dance beats, New Wave sass and self-deprecating 'tude: Hard not to like a band who introduces itself with a Toni Basil-worthy cheerleader’s chant that insists “C-S-S-Suxxx!” Or one who forges something as instantly inviting as “Let’s Make Love and Listen to Death From Above” from a grab-bag of cheesy synth riffs and club music clichés, all the while paying tribute to one of their own fave indie acts. There’s an innocent, amateurish quality to vocalist Lovefoxxx that, wed to the snarky disdain for fame and pretension of "Art Bitch" and “Meeting Paris Hilton" and her band's disparate pop-craft savvy on “Off the Hook” and “Alcohol,” can be downright irresistible. In a world crowded by sanctimonious pop stars pleading to be taken seriously, CSS often succeeds simply by challenging you not to.

Nice One!

Hey all you DFA, LeTigre types, this is your stuff right here!! Dancing music, drinking music, rockin funk rock with a slpash of electronics. Funny lyrics and flat out fun stuff, that doesnt take itself too seriously (but isnt silly to the point of stupidity). Buy the whole thing

Meh

If I really listened to this album more before I purchased it I would have only gotten about 4 songs. The rest are a bit superfluous and self-indulgent. They have a great sound and awesome vocals, which is what drew me to their sound but they need to grow up a bit and get over themselves. No one is that cool. They should try a think piece not an, I'm the s**t piece. But they are fun to dance to if you don't listen to their lyrics. CSS stick to the bouncy beats, those are the best part of your music. Stay in school.

So much fun!

I saw CSS open for Ladytron in Denver last night. They put on such a fun show and won over an audience that didn't know who they were in a matter of minutes. Their CD does not quite capture how good they sound live so I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars. Everyone should own a copy of this.

Years Active: '00s, '10s

São Paulo, Brazil's provocative, freewheeling dance-rock sextet CSS take their name from an abbreviation of "cansei de ser sexy," which is Portuguese for "tired of being sexy" (though, considering that the lead singer goes by the name Lovefoxxx, it's arguable how much that phrase actually applies to the band). CSS also include bassist Iracema Trevisan, guitarist/drummer/keyboardist Luiza Sá, guitarist Ana Rezende,...
