Album Review

The shadowy blue-black cover artwork (complete with sultry model) is an obvious homage to vintage cool jazz albums, but Spain's compositions are much more concerned with the dark and restless interiors of the psyche than those you'll find on any 1950s jazz record. It's no secret that Spain are trying to evoke a brooding, late-night atmosphere, and the quartet succeeds at doing this with its seductive drones (with lots of languorous guitar/basslines and shuffle drums) and melancholy, pensive songs. It's very much of a piece.

Blue Moods

The Blue Moods of of Spain is about as close to suicide as you can get. It's a deep, album that can take you from one world and set down upon a world of solitude. That same solitude that is accompanied by a haze of cigarette smoke, whiskey(choose your own adventure for this one) and your self in a forgotten bar in the middle of a large metropolitan city. This is where the Blue Moods of Spain will land you. Reading a tragic demise of character of a mediocre book will give it's death more meaning then even the author ever envisioned. That's what the Blue Moods of Spain will do for you. This isn't an album that you should own, this is an album that you must own. Rich and lush, it's a pleasure just to know that you own it.

An Unknown Classic

I've loved this album since it came out in the 90's. The minimal instrumentation reveals all sorts of subtle textures, moods and expressions. The use of silence is masterful. The smooth, dry vocals barely conceal a vulnerability that makes this one of the saddest and most beautiful albums ever.

Absolutely Perfect

This is one of the most underrated albums I know of. Josh Haden's voice is awesome, the songs are smooth and beautiful. I can't believe these guys didn't blow up. Live show was the best, recordings are the closest thing you'll get now.

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Jazz great Charlie Haden has reared musically gifted sons and daughters who, interestingly, have not followed Dad's jazz footsteps, but opted for alternative rock turf instead. Petra Haden has done so in that dog. (sic), and Josh Haden, though he plays the same instrument as his father, leads Spain. Spain do have some decided jazz influences, particularly in the refined, spacious arrangements and precise rhythm section, both of which reflect the influence of cool/lounge jazz. But they are most definitely...
