Album Review

Sitting a head above their peers in the emo/post-hardcore scene of the 2000s, Alexisonfire seem to get better with each release. Now a muscular force to be reckoned with, Crisis is the band's best album to date. The guys don't sound like an emo act trying to earn its tough-guy stripes through spastic freakouts and raw, throat-shredding shouts. Instead, they fully embrace the glory of post-hardcore with aggression, passion, and a controlled intensity that pushes their playing, singing, and — yes, screaming — to the limit, although not without direction or need. Chaos is in balance on Crisis, from the multi-vocalist dynamics and driving rhythms to the pummeling drumbeats and spiraling guitars. Even the "this is where we scream bloody murder and this is where we sing" components are seamlessly pieced together, building upon — or bouncing off of — one another without disjointed headache-inducing results.

Vocals are much of what stands out, namely the power and maturity behind main vocalists George Pettit and Dallas Green's strong deliveries, while the band channels the vigor of acts like Thrice and Rise Against without sounding cheap or derivative. Particularly in moments of rousing exhilaration is the latter group suggested, as in the invigorating "Boiled Frogs" and especially "We Are the End." The opening force of "Drunks, Lovers, Sinners and Saints" recalls the throaty power of Hot Water Music before slipping into a very Thrice-like chorus that challenges, "Are you even listening?/Are you pretending that your heart's in the right place?" Setting the album's overall tone, it's a song that immediately commands attention with earnest, forthright conviction proclaiming, "Alright, this is from our hearts/Sincerity over simple chords/We made some mistakes...but it's a long time coming when you're giving it everything." Alexisonfire embrace the drive and explosiveness of their past to fully come into their own on Crisis — an album that's the polar opposite of an actual disaster.

Customer Reviews

"Crisis" avoided the curse of the junior albums.

Expectation (n) - the act or state of looking forward or anticipating.

Chalk up a two MMVA awards and Best New Artist Award at the 2005 Junos, countless tours spanning to all points of the world and suddenly expectations of Alexisonfire's debut Vagrant release, "Crisis" begin to swell.

Disappointment (n) - the state or feeling of being disappointed.

Obviously, disappointment is going to be inevitable. With their debut 2002 self-titled release, Alexisonfire forged into everyone's skulls what playing loud, fast and angry was all about, or as the band likes to say, "the sound of two Catholic high-school girls in mid-knife-fight.” "Crisis" isn't their self-titled debut or their 2004 release, "Watch Out!" So for every fan who was expecting Alexisonfire to spit out another release in the vein of either of these two albums, prepare to be disappointed.

For everyone else, hold on tight because this album is going to give sonic assault a brand new definition. "Crisis" is above all things, dark and heavy. It is matured, much like a fine wine waiting in dusty cellar for that one day of celebration. And while "Crisis" fails to call for a celebration with its somber lyrics and haunting melodies, the boys in Alexisonfire should take a moment to celebrate their latest release.

We've all heard of the junior curse. You know, the one where a band releases two solid albums and then either implodes or releases a luke-warm album, shortly thereafter fading into obscurity. Alexisonfire has avoided the curse, and in turn they have released an album that will define their career.

With their first single "This Could Be Anywhere in the World," which happens to be one of the strongest songs on this album, it would not be surprising if "Crisis" began to attract an even larger audience that they already have. "Crisis" isn't just for hardcore kids or scenster kids or metal kids. This album will invoke any ear craving an honest dose of rock n roll.

Stand-out tracks include, "This Could Be Anywhere in the World," "Mailbox Arson" and "Crisis." The only track that isn't worth listening to on repeat is "You Burn First." It kills the flow of the album. Erase this blunder and you would find yourself with an almost perfect post-hardcore, post-metal, post-rock, post-whatever album.

If you're looking for an album to prepare yourself for the fall semester, work week, or school year pick up "Crisis" and let Alexisonfire guide you into winter. Hopefully this one will be much more forgiving than the Blizzard of 1977. -Robby Lester (emotionalpunk.com)

Maybe music isn't dead, maybe we just forgot what it sounded like

Pretty much Alexisonfire's CD Crisis... is nonstop awesome.. of course nothing holds up to their self titled.. but this cd is amazing.... and yes maybe one day it will be just as good as their first. My key songs are This Could Be Anywhere in the World, Mailbox Arson, Boiled Frogs, Keep it on Wax. But all in all the whole cd is good. From start to finish. Keep it good guys... pce

Incredible band

A couple years ago i used to listen to exclusivly screamo and hardcore bands. That only lasted for a couple months though, my current range of music is incredibly wide, and im able to suggest 4-5 bands for any of my friends, and theyd like them for sure. The thing with alexisonfire is: they have the PERFECT balance of screaming and melodious singing, they are honestly the best hardcore band ive ever heard. Ive heard all of their albums and Crisis is my favorite. Watch out was also really well done, but the guitar riffs in crisis are more polished which lends to much better breakdowns. Which is another thing they do extremely well. This is one of the few cds that i can listen to without taking a break. The songs all flow very well except for you burn first. Not that it isnt a good song, i love the song, the vocals are such a change from previous songs, but in a good way. Of course boiled frogs is an amazing song, it also has a very catchy riff. My favorite song is probably we are the sound or keep it on the wax. My only complaints about the album are that the lyrics are a little emo. Basically just enjoy alexisonfire, i think youll like them even if youre into a completlely different style of music
