Album Review

A far better collection than its American counterpart (Anthology), The Best of the Vapors offers a bit more for the fans, combining all of the singles, five rare B-sides, and most of the best album tracks (though the Magnets album is still woefully underrepresented). As an introduction, there is no better place to start and for collectors, it's indispensable.

More than a 1 hitter

People only know "Turning Japanese," a downright classic, however The Vapors had plenty of other great songs in their short , two album lifespan. This album covers their best moments and should not be missed. Especially the final two minutes of "Letters From Hiro"... a hook as catchy as their one hit..

Turning Japanese - The Best of the Vapors

One of the better period bands with catchy melodies and hooks, fair lyric writing, and considering the amount of bad talent that was around at the time, quite good guitar work. Vocals were more than adequate for the genre of music they chose to produce.

"Turning Japanese"… is the least song on this album

Their U.S. hit was a good one, but the rest of this collection is a real surprise…seriously good, driving bass and rhythm, and knife-like slashes of power chords on the guitar. If you like the Jam, you'll like the rest of the Vapors music. Great stuff.

Led by vocalist/guitarist Dave Fenton, the Vapors were a short-lived new wave guitar group that is best known for the spiky pop single "Turning Japanese." Fenton formed the first version of the Vapors in 1978, yet he was the only member to survive that lineup; in 1979, former Ellery Bops members Ed Bazalgette (lead guitar) and Howard Smith (drums) joined the band, and bassist Steve Smith came aboard shortly afterward.
