iTunes Review

Riding an easy, feel-good groove that fans of Jack Johnson, Ben Harper, or G. Love would appreciate, Australian trio (guitar, bass, drums) the Beautiful Girls creates laid-back, mostly acoustic music that stays deep in the pocket, with a solidly swinging backbeat, some subtle reggae rhythms around the edges, and a tender side that suits their name. Water contains material selected from their five previous releases (mostly EPs) in order to give audiences outside of their native Oz a complete picture of their music. And despite being a compilation, Water flows well enough to be a coherent album in its own right. Singer and guitarist Mat McHugh has a pleasant, soulful voice, and he can sing softly over an acoustic guitar progression or pull off a hip-hop-influenced vocal delivery just as convincingly. Featuring tight, bluesy jams (“Periscopes,” “On a Clear Day”), sunny-day vibes (“Good Times,” “Weight of the World), and a funky instrumental (“At the First Sign of Trouble”), this is mood music for the beach or a shady porch.

Great summer music

A band, like this could only ever come from Australia. The Beautiful Girls' incorporate elements as diverse as the sublime rhythms of the recent Californian crew to the melodic and contemplative nature of Nick Drake. It is raw. In their approach to production and arrangement the band deliberately shied away from excessive studio polish. The roots-loving TBG have once again managed to meld a contemporary sound and songwriting approach with an old school flavor.

Thank Goodness for Australia

The Beautiful Girls' "Water" is a CD that everybody should own. The band combines reggae, jam and pop all into an acoustic blend and succeeds at it. It's great summer music and can be listened to for partying, relaxing, driving almost anything. Recommended tracks; 2.) Morning Sun- Probably the most upbeat song on the CD, with a driving bassline it is a great jam song 3.) On a Clear Day- This is a catchy slower song and gets a little annoying but the jam at the end of it is well worth the wait. 4.) Good Times- Generally awesome and upbeat 5.) Water- Great acoustic guitar work, awesome riff. A little slower but still great 6.) At the First Sign of Trouble- An all insturmental song, great guitar work once again, reminiscent of a flamenco song in my opinion 8.) La Mar- Very slow but catchy and peaceful. Gotta love it 10.) Weight of the World- The last 4 songs are slow but this one. This song saves the end of the CD, very reggae-esque. It's a shame The Beautiful Girls are not well known other than in Australia. I cannot wait until they become bigger and hopefully tour America. The Beautiful Girls own!

Phenom

Once again the Aussies are coming on strong. Outstanding album with hints of the John Butler Trio. Love this type of music.
