Album Review

Having helped generate the first wave of '90s pop-punk, Face to Face was due to profit from the mainstream success of artists like Lit and Blink 182 who had taken their melodic approach to punk songcrafting to new commercial heights. With so much punk credibility to be had, the last thing anyone expected these famous SoCal punkers to do is release a hard rock record; which is exactly what the foursome did when they shipped their first disc for Beyond Records in 1999. From the initial drum and guitar blasts of the record's lead cut "Overcome" Ignorance Is Bliss lets listeners in on the fact that Face to Face would not be limited to the punk genre, and that the quartet's songwriting skills stand up against the most successful of hard rock bands. This fifth studio release is ten songs deep, singer/guitarist Trevor Keith's voice is classic, and the production is powerful and detailed. Punk politics get tossed to the wind as the band slams through one mid-tempo hard rock gem after another. With their mid-'90s alternative radio mega-hit "Disconnected" — from the band's previous studio release Big Choice — Face to Face proved themselves as pop-punk trendsetters. Ignorance is Bliss ironically takes this radio-hook mastery to a higher level, yet the CD was almost universally ignored by radio stations just as it was praised by critics. It would be easy to assume that fans and radio programmers alike were hesitant to support such a legendary punk band playing straight-ahead alternative rock; however, a close inspection of the Face to Face discography reveals that they did indeed release a very punk record, Reactionary, a year later to similar radio and sales reaction. It's also curious to note that the band consistently sold out larger and larger venues during the two-year period each record was promoted. Face to Face might have confused some of their fans, but ultimately, stretching out musically with Ignorance Is Bliss was a sound artistic, if not commercial, decision.

The Best Album of 1999

And I don't say that lightly. I tend to feel that Jimmy Eat World's "Clarity" is far and away one of the greatest albums of 1999, but Face to Face show more growth and maturity from their previous efforts with "Ignorance Is Bliss." Yes, if you want another "Big Choice," "Don't Turn Away," or self-titled album, you will not likely be pleased. Nevertheless, this album represents a huge leap forward in muscianship and musicality for the Victorville quartet. To sum it up, the band seemed to wake up one day and realize that they were thirty years old and still played adolescent punk rock. The result is nothing short of superb. Standout tracks: "Heart of Hearts" "Prodigal" "I Know What You Are" "Lost" "Maybe Next Time" There is a recurring theme of spirituality throughout the record, which is a great departure from the group's previous efforts. Just look at the song titles: "Burden," "Heart of Hearts," "Prodigal," "The Devil You know (God Is a Man)," "Lost," etc. Trevor Keith is a genius. It may not be the FtF's definitive album, but it is easily their best. I was saddened when "Reactionary" was a return to pre-"Ignorance Is Bliss" form.

a little slow, but not bad at all

I'd consider myself to be a "F2F" fan for sure. I bought "Shoot the Moon" the greatest hits album and fell even more in love with the band. "Ignorance is Bliss" differs from their past albums in the fact that this album has much slower, balladesque tracks compared to "I Won't Lie Down" "Shoot the Moon" or "Disconnected". I definitely recommend this album to Face to Face fans, but if you're just getting into them, sample some of their better albums before buying this one.

A must have!

As a F2F fan, I'm pretty biased when it comes to critiquing their music, but this is probably my favorite album from them! This album definately displays their songwriting talents, and they have once again pushed the envelope for punk music. Some highlights: Everyone Hates a Know-It-All Prodigal Devil You Know Run In Circles Maybe Next Time I wish I could find more albums that are excellent from beginning to end like this one!
