iTunes Review

After the blues influence of their first album, Jethro Tull retooled with guitarist Martin Barre and began their trek into English folk music and the signature Tull sound. “A New Day Yesterday” still holds to the smoky blues line, but “Jeffrey Goes to Leicester Square” is exactly the mix of flute, organ and electric guitar that fans have come to expect. The instrumental, “Bouree” is a virtuoso piece that exemplifies the best in progressive rock: technical but with great heart and a sense of history. The mystical push of “Back to the Family” with Ian Anderson’s distinctive vocals represent the band’s sense of drama that would hold through classics such as Aqualung and Thick As A Brick. “Look Into the Sun” is a great acoustic British folk-like tune where Anderson sings with an extra “shake” in his voice. “Nothing Is Easy” spotlights the band’s instrumental prowess with unexpected breaks and tempo and texture changes. “Fat Man” aims for a rumble through the jungle with its hyper-extended percussion. “Reasons for Waiting” includes gloomy organ and a beautiful string arrangement. The “Remastered Version” includes five bonus cuts, including the stereo and mono single mix of “Living In the Past.”

Eagles rip off Tull

The track "we used to know" was stolen cord for cord for the song "Hotel California". Ian told me.......

Stand Up

This record was stolen from me in college. I am now 42 and remembering that I don't want to be a fat man. Tasty stuff.

'Stand Up' stands up...

After 'Thick As A Brick,' for me this is the next best Tull album. I can never listen to 'Aqualung' straight through even though it is considered one of the best progessive rock records of all time. 'Stand Up', however, holds my attention. The blues of "New Day" and the jazz-ish quality of "Nothing is Easy" alone make this a worthwhile listen. But it's the hidden gems such as "Reason for Waiting" or "Jeffrey Goes" or "Back to the Family" that show the enthusiasm and chemistry of a progressive rock band making its debut (yes, I know that 'This Was', a more blues rock album, preceded 'Stand Up.' This I believe was the first with Martin Barre, though.) 'Stand Up' certainly stands up as one of the best prog rock records ever...according to me, of course.

Jethro Tull was a unique phenomenon in popular music history. Their mix of hard rock; folk melodies; blues licks; surreal, impossibly dense lyrics; and overall profundity defied easy analysis, but that didn't dissuade fans from giving them 11 gold and five platinum albums. At the same time, critics rarely took them seriously, and they were off the cutting edge of popular music since the end of the 1970s. But no record store in the country would want to be without multiple copies of each of their...
