O Brother, Here Thou Art.

Back in the 1970's, when I was a quiet and bookish middle school kid, I brought this collection, titled "Negro Prison Songs," home from the public library (where I also discovered John Cage for the first time, but that'll be another review). For a white country boy, this music *stirred* me. The song "Rosie" has stayed in my mind for thirty years - I first came to understand *longing* through this song. These are chants from the meat of the heart, making the singer a free man for the time he sings. Forget Johnny Cash. Forget Biggie and Tupac. Here is real music that breaks the chains of the imprisoned soul from men who *really* knew prison life.

Historical Recordings...

Just incredible. "Early in the Mornin'" gives me goose bumps everytime... There's nothing more to say....it's just great

This one of the best records I've ever bought. Amazing.

As real as it gets. This some of the roots of American music right here. Absolutely inspiring.
