Album Review

One by One is the most accomplished album Foo Fighters have made, which isn't necessarily the same as the best. Picking up the clean, focused sound and attitude of There Is Nothing Left to Lose, One by One is gleaming hard rock: it may have a shiny production, but hits hard in its rhythm and its impeccably distorted guitars. Dave Grohl's songs often express (or at least suggest) tortured emotions in their lyrics, but the album doesn't hit at a gut-level; it's too polished for that. It's not a bad thing, since the band is damn good and the production is more focused than any of the Foos' previous albums. The problem is, Grohl's songwriting has slipped slightly. It's still sturdy and melodic, yet not as immediate or memorable. Nothing is as majestic as "Learn to Fly," haunting as "Everlong," gut-crunching as "Monkey Wrench," or even as boneheadedly irresistible as their contribution to the Orange County soundtrack, "The One". Instead, it all fits together and sounds good as a piece, without offering individual moments to savor. Not the worst tradeoff, of course, but it's hard not to wish that the songs stuck in your head the way they used to, even if the album is still enjoyable as a whole.

Gems in the Rough

While some of the songs may not resonate with all Foo fans, there's a fair amount of different bits to be found here, from the fast paced "All My Life" to the trademark "Times Like These". In particular, I think "Come Back", the last song on the album, is overlooked. The experiments with sound and distortion with the vocals really mix well, and I'd encourage people to check out at least some of the lesser known songs. Never know what you'll find.

The Foo's Worst and STILL Good

For once I have to agree with the "official" review...this is not the Foo Fighter's best album, not even close. In fact it is probably their worst release. The songwriting really ISN'T up to the standard set before or since, and the production IS too glossy. Funny thing about it is, One By One is still a good album. Their isn't really a bad song on the whole album. It's very listenable and easily enjoyed. But there is definitely something different or missing here. Still, Times Like These is a FF classic and not even the best tune here. That would be All My Life in my opinion. Have It All is another great song. Everything else here is at least worth a listen or two and usually more. So Foo Fighter's worst...still very good.
