iTunes Review

Though they have been playing together for decades, Libyan guitar slingers Tinariwen have had few opportunities to record in their strife-wrought musical career. Their bio includes considerably more mentions of chaos and Kalashnikovs than of recording dates and live performances. For some, this is only another part of Tinariwen’s appeal. But though they are said to bear some seventeen bullet wounds between them, all of these sensationalistic details fade to insignificance in the face of their otherworldly compositions. Tinariwen do not play traditional Taureg music, though songs like “Awa Didjen” and the plaintive “Soixante Trois” boast that music's sinuous melodies and bluesy chord progressions. But Tinariwen approach these compositions with a decidedly western attitude, lacing their desert blues with aggressive percussion and bracing feedback that enhances the hypnotic, otherworldly qualities of their music. Call it what you will, “desert psychedelia” or “bedouin guitar trance”, Tinariwen make exceptional music that has almost no corollaries in the contemporary pop landscape.

Mistaken identity leads to fabulous find.

I have been disappointed in most music lately, but NOT with this one!! And, I can honestly say if it had not been for the leading man’s hair I would have missed out on this treasure. This group was suggested to me in the ITunes store based on a recent purchase. When I glanced at the photo, I thought it was Jimi Hendrix. I’m a Hendrix fan so I clicked on it thinking, “hey what’s this; I thought I had all the Hendrix stuff?! Once I read the reviews and heard them being compared to some of my favorites such as Santana, I previewed the songs and I was totally hooked. The music is powerful, mesmerizing and beautiful. Before picking up this CD, I did not know anything about the Tourareg culture. I am quite sure that a lot of people will enjoy this music once they hear it. I feel blessed to have stumbled onto it. I gave this album download five stars for the music but ITunes needs to include the CD booklet with this one because the lyrics are translated into English and the CD also includes some interesting background information. I have also have copies of Amassakoul and The Radio Tisdas Sessions. All are excellent!

Beautiful Berber/Amazigh Blues

I have loved this group since I saw a CD on the rack in 2002 with the title written in tifinagh (the Amazigh alphabet), a wildly rare thing to see. I read somewhere that this is their most "fully realized" album and I am not sure what that means beacause I never felt anything was lacking on the previous two albums and would encourage newcomers to get those, too. Be sure to see them live if you can, a really wonderful show.

first!

first! I heard this on Salon.com's podcast and I really liked it. I'm very happy to find the entire album on iTunes. Vocals like Nusrat Fateh Ali Kahn and guitar like Ali Farka Toure... and he sorta looks like Jimi Hendrix. How cool can you get.

Tinariwen is a Tuareg group that performs in a Middle Eastern/African style similar to artists like Ali Farka Toure or Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. All of the musicians originate from the southern Sahara, the group's name, meaning "empty places," is a reflection of their land of origin. The band formed in the rebel camps of Colonel Ghadaffi, as each of the musicians had been forced from their nomadic lifestyle into involuntary military service.
