iTunes Review

Patti Smith only had one genuine “hit” single with 1978’s “Because the Night,” a song co-written with Bruce Springsteen, so Smith’s “Best-Of” collection is her personal reflection on what was at that point a 27-year recording career. The collection comes complete with new live cuts and rarities that give a full bodied overview of this punk poet’s evolution into an artistic deity. She was never an accomplished singer and her band swung wildly at times, but she made an unmistakable mark on everyone she touched. Oddly, she excludes “Land,” for which the album was named, but does include her debut single, “Piss Factory,” demos (“Redondo Beach”), a newly recorded tune (“Higher Learning”), a poem from her 2002 New Year’s Day reading at St. Mark’s Church in NYC (“Notes to the Future”), live recordings (“Birdland”), and an excellent summary of her career (“Gloria,” “Pissing in a River,” “Free Money”) that is far more balanced than might be expected. As an added bonus, she includes a cover of Prince’s “When Doves Cry.”

Doesn't Take a Patti Smith Fan to Love This Album

The album is a true testiment to Patti's originality and talent. This is my favorite Patti Smith album to date - a great collection.

ALL RIGHT PATTI!

Nice mix of her songs. Had the privledge of seeing her live back at CBGB's (Wish I wasn't so wasted that night!) Glad to be able to download a copy of p**s factory which I haven't heard since I lost the orginal 45 over twenty five years ago. That song has deep meaning for me becuase when that song came out I was working in my own p**s job working for and with some really dreadfull people and counting pennies. Now I'm coasting towards a good retirement in not that many years with more than enough money to send my kids through college and hearing that song reminding me of the dark times that I made past was an uplifting experience.

her best album

pick this one up first b4 you buy anyother one of her albums this cd is her best land all the way!

Punk rock's poet laureate, Patti Smith ranks among the most influential female rock & rollers of all time. Ambitious, unconventional, and challenging, Smith's music was hailed as the most exciting fusion of rock and poetry since Bob Dylan's heyday. If that hybrid remained distinctly uncommercial for much of her career, it wasn't a statement against accessibility so much as the simple fact that Smith followed her own muse wherever it took her — from structured rock songs to free-form experimentalism,...
