iTunes Review
It's one thing to feign sensuality with the use of scented candles, quite another to capture its most carnal incarnation, as Tricky's trip-hop masterpiece Maxinquaye does. Aided and inspired by his muse Martina Topley-Bird, he layers hollow and humid percussion loops over Bird's breathy, teasing vocals and samples that flirt with funk, dub, hip hop, and even heavy metal (a livid cover of Public Enemy's "Black Steel," made all the more relevant in today's war times). The result is unparalleled, paranoid and postmodern R&B.
Customer Reviews
Perfect, end to end
This album, Portishead's "Dummy", and Massive Attack's "Protection" (many argue "Blue Lines") are the essential trip-hop full-length statements of the 90s. "Maxinquaye" sustains a unique eerie ambiance throughout, creating a cohesive musical experience that flows through all the tracks. Very cool and imaginative textures, sounds, and ideas populate the songs and make for a dynamic yet hushed musical landscape. More sonic detail is revealed on repeated listens. Highly recommended.
Tricky's Only Good Record
One of the other reviewers called this...uh...avant garde. Well, it's hardly avant garde, it is however a perfect example of the now very stale "trip-hop" genre. Right up there with Blue Lines (nn which Tricky collaberated), Protection, and Portishead's two records. Great records all of these, and this is Tricky's only good and only listenable release.
Trickylicious
All the old Tricky along with Massive Attack is all you need to discover the best trip hop had to offer.
