My favorite Interpol album

I have been a long time Interpol fan, and OLTA is by far my favorite album of theirs.

A band in reverse

Ever since Interpol was declared one of the most important new bands in the world back in 2002, they've been doing their best to ensure they don't have that kind of pressure heaped on them again. Pioneer to the Falls is the only track here that stands up to the best moments on Turn on the Bright Lights - it's such a fantastic track that I considered the entire CD a worthwhile purchase due to its presence. However, the first single, Heinrich Maneuver, is an instantly-forgettable throwaway track that would be a weak moment even on Antics. The second, No I In Threesome, feels lyrically forced and musically uninventive.

There are some good moments as well. Mammoth keeps the tradition of the energy-laden anthems the band debuted on Antics and ends up being the second-best song on the album. I'm also partial to the slower moments near the end of the album on Wrecking Ball and The Lighthouse. Ultimately as an album this falls short of the brilliance of Turn on the Bright Lights and even the solid quality of Antics. I haven't felt the need to listen to most of this album since its release in 2007, but those wanting just a couple of tracks shouldn't hesitate to add Pioneer to the Falls and Mammoth to their collections. I will continue to follow Interpol and hope their next effort breaks some new ground.

<3 it!

One of my favorite albums from Interpol! Looking forward to see them live in February!

Although formed during the late '90s, Interpol rose to international attention in 2002 as part of New York City's post-punk revival. The group took its cues from Joy Division and the Chameleons, fashioning a darkly atmospheric sound helmed by intricate guitars and Paul Banks' somber baritone. Interpol also had a striking visual presence marked by the members' fondness for suits, which only strengthened their stately, British-influenced appeal. Nevertheless, the band remained rooted in America, where...
