iTunes Review
Queens' loyal subjects will forever refer to this record as the last speed freak shriek of Nick Oliveri, that bald bassist dude with the sick, brah goatee. (The band's tower of power frontman, Josh Homme, fired his childhood friend/former Kyuss bandmate due to some drastic behavioral differences.) Oliveri's occasional big bully outburst (namely the sloppy thrash-punk of "Six Shooter") isn't the appeal of Queens' breakthrough album, though. That distinction goes to the locomotive beats of Dave Grohl — a guest drummer stolen for a session from the Foo Fighters — and Homme's riff-centric, desert storm songwriting. Seriously now, no matter how heavy things get, huge hooks remain the roots of each and every stoner pop song. That includes the spine-snapping immediacy of "No One Knows," the pendulum groove of "The Sky Is Fallin'," and the gun turret drum fills, catastrophic chords and banshee wails of "Song For the Dead." Oh yeah, a typically moody/melancholy Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees) also stops by for a few songs to sing with the soupy thickness of an S.O.S. smoke signal, while guitar god Dean Ween of, well, Ween, fills in whatever white space Homme hasn't already bludgeoned and bloodied. All and all, modern rock's rarely this revitalizing, so enjoy it while your speakers last.
Customer Reviews
Good Album BUT...
they really need to find a new person to do the album reviews all this guy/girl does is insult the band and compare them to bands like the Strokes and White Stripes who are basicly in a whole nother genre of music. It doesnt make any sense to compare QTSA, because they are heavier-devilworshiping-metal rock, to bands like white stripes and the strokes, who are indie-alt-rock...since when are those two the same genre? This album is great in its own genre. and the only thing that guy/girl got right about the album is that Dave Grohl IS the GREATEST drummer in the history of music and his talent is not pushed to the back ground in the music and ignored, i think if you were deaf you'd hear his drumming in EVERY Song...listen to Songs for the Dead...wow...truely amazing...Buy this album...you wont be dissapointed...the whole album, minus a few tracks: 1, 2, and 7, is great...i love the DJ talking inbetween select songs...
KRDL! The KURDLE! We spoil music for Everyone!
WAH *SPANK* "Shutup you little brat." Further proof that the Queens have way too much time on their hands, no less thanks to Dave Ketching for the Radio Inspiration. Check the Individual reviews: Millionaire: Start the engines, and kick the album with a bang. I don't like screamo (see my Rated R Review), but the guitar and the headbanging drums by Drumlord Dave Grohl redefine robot rock. No One Knows: Overplayed, but for a good reason. Steady ONE TWO THREE FOUR pounding guitar by Mr. Homme himself. First it Giveth: Damn. Dave Grohl does it AGAIN! With double bass pedals flying faster than a european swallow, the chorus and everything else on this song just throws the album into second gear. Keep it coming! Hope to see some more Grohl/Queens stuff in the future. Song for the Dead: Although it is a little angry, it still conveys that supersense of music that you need. That's right. YOU NEED IT! The Sky is Fallin': Genius. Guitar. Joshua. All six letters. All the same. The Best of the best make this song a winner. It's my ringtone for gods sake! Love it. Six Shooter: I think not. But the laughing in the end may mean that the song isn't true, which I'd like to beleive. No thanks. Hanging Tree: Ripped straight off the Desert Sessions, this banger sweeps up all the loose ends left out in Six Shooter. Go with the Flow: Lighter, larger, and more fun. A single. Fantastic! Good guitar, good singing. Gonna Leave You: Nice and smooth, good singing, good chill music. Do It Again: Sounds like classic QotSA to me. Another great smash and crash with a great radio segment including some hallarious religious music. My favorite thing: "Big Rock as a Weapon!" God is on the Radio: Good Shuffle tune. Great for driving. What are they whispering though? Another Love Song: Yeah, another love song that shouldn't be on this album. Bo-ring. Song for the Deaf: YES! We're finnally here! The Best song on the album. Great driving bass part, and I love the 8 bar guitar riff. To die for! Love the Laughing "Feel Good Hit of the Summer" Reprise. Mosquito Song: Conveys some Jethro Tull feelings in there. Nicely sung, sounds so light, but so dark. And whaddya know: Last line, "Lullabies to Paralyze". Fantastic album. You can't do without it. Keep it on you AT ALL TIMES. Just in case you need a little inspiration. Great for homework, especially history and persuasive essays. Yep.
Full On Review
Heres my track by track review of one of QOTSA's best albums. 1. Real Song for the Deaf: N/A 2. Millionare: 10/10: One of my favorite Queens songs ever! Nick's hardcore voicecombined with the ponding guitars and drums will have your head banging in no time. 3. No One Knows: 9.5: A little overplayed but QOTSA at their best. 4. First It Givith: 9/10: Josh's vocals are top notch here along with great drumming. 5. Song For The Dead: 7/10: Not my favorite track. Too jumpy for me. 6. The Sky Is Fallin': 9/10: One of the best on the album: Josh's soothing voice merges with the sea of furious guitar riffs to create a great song. 7.Six Shooter: 8/10: NICK case closed. 8. Hanging Tree: 8/10: A nice change from Shooter. Marks raspy voice is great with the heavy riffs. 9. Go With The Flow: 9.5/10: Grohl's drums are irrestistably catchy and every time you hear the song it's impossible to not try and drum along with him. 10. Gonna Leave You: 8.5/10: Love It. Great vocals, drumming, and guitars. 11. Do It Again: 8/10: Very Catchy riff and the chorus is an automatic sing along. 12. God Is On The Radio: 9.5/10: Super Catchy and amazingly even a little creepy. 13. Another Love Song: 7.5/10: OK but sounds truely like a desert song. 14. Song for the Deaf: 9/10: Heavy, dark and awesome. Enough said. 15. Mosquito Song: 9.5/10: Creepiest song on the album and definently sets the tone for QOTSA's next album. If you don't have this album right now, then you definently need it now!
