Album Review
Every generation has rockabilly cats to call their own. The original sound and intent gets diluted throughout the years, but the sight of tattooed, backwoods greasers with pompadours remains a beloved rock & roll image. In the '90s, nobody did it better than Reverend Horton Heat, but Melbourne, Australia natives the Living End give the good reverend a run for his money on their self-titled American debut. True, the Living End's sound owes far more to the Ramones than it does to Eddie Cochran, or even the Clash, but they've cleverly appropriated certain rockabilly signatures — most ridiculously, the upright acoustic bass — that give their homage to the golden age of punk a bit of charm. That would be enough to elevate them above many of their contemporaries, but they happen to rock harder and write better songs than many late-'90s punkers, and that's enough to make The Living End a guilty pleasure for old-school punk fans. For younger listeners, it's just simply a good rock record.
Customer Reviews
The Living End's connection with Green Day.
So as a lot of you have taken notice, The Living End "sounds kinda like Green Day". Well I dunno if this makes much difference, but they are signed onto Billie Joe Armstrong's (you know, the vocalist and lead guitar of Green Day), record label, Adeline Street here in the US. They also toured/played with each other in Aus. in 2005. I can see why people think of Green Day when they listen to The Living End. The first song of their's I heard was "We Want More" and as a fan of Green Day, I immediately thought of them. But after I listened to more music from The Living End, I shook off the thought. I'm sure that they have collaborated with different artists in the past, but as far as I'm concerned, their style and music is all their own.
Sounds like Green Day?
Sure they do. Great album for The Living End, as is their other material. The Living End opened for Green Day concerts almost ten years ago, after they were signed to Billy Joe's label... I'm sure they are all great friends.
Amazing
I have loved this album since the day it came out even though i had no idea who they were when i first heard it i still think its an amazing album and an essential item for people who love music.
