iTunes Review

"Seven" was an early alter ego of Atmosphere MC Slug. As this album's title suggests, the Minneapolis group's fourth full-length is meant as a kind of diary, depicting its front man's physical and mental travails on the road from underdog striver to indie-rap sensation. Amidst the obligatory tales of shows, girls, and parties we get a heavy dose of Slug-certified introspection, but anyone who hears this disc and still mouths the old Atmosphere-is-soft jive must have figs in their ears. Over beats stacked with back-breaking snare cracks and jumpy keyboard lines, Slug lets rip on "Bird Songs Why the Caged I Know" and throws down with his fearsome protégé Brother Ali on "Cats Van Bags." That said, things aren't quite so heavy on the lead single, "Trying to Find a Balance," and by the time the album-closing "Always Coming Back Home to You" ends, Slug seems downright reflective.

After some early gigs as Urban Atmosphere, where Slug DJed behind Spawn's rhyming, the pair hooked up with producer Ant (Anthony Davis), as...
