Album Review

The full-length debut, produced by Pete Anderson (Dwight Yoakam), from this Raleigh, NC quintet. With a driving guitar sound that picks up where the New Riders of the Purple Sage left off in the '70s and what Jason & the Scorchers started in the '80s, the Backsliders will appeal to fans who like their country a little rough around the edges. The songwriting and musical attitude comes off as honest and sincere, and Anderson does a great job of toughening the band's already muscular live-show attack, without messing with its charm. Adding a little Hammond B-3 on the soulful rockers, the country elements are in turn accentuated by occasional pedal steel and mandolin. Standout cuts include the heartfelt "Broken Wings," the melodic honky-tonk of "Lonesome Teardrops" and the rambunctious album closer "Cowboy Boots."

One of the greatest bar bands ever

I have to say I'm delighted to find this band on iTunes! They were ubiquitous on the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill bar scene in the late 90's and they always put on one hell of show. They're classified on here as "country" but I'd call them more country-blues-rock. The album is uneven but still a great listen, and the final track, "Cowboy Boots", is about rocking and dancing as country music gets (the lead singer used to guzzle Jack Daniels on stage during the dual guitar solo). Overall I'd say these guys had about three outfits and five dollars to their name, but they knew what they were doing.

Great band

Just really great straight up cow punk album. Wish there were more albums from this lineup. One of the best honky Tonk bar bands ever.
