iTunes Review

With a look that's predicated on leather, thrift store threads and dramatic swatches of mascara, and a sound that's ripped straight from vintage arcade cabinets — the band’s name actually stems from an Atari title — Crystal Castles are too-cool-for-school on the surface and stunning when it comes to pummeling your stereo. Even when Alice Glass' vocals are split into stammering phrases by Ethan Kath, a producer/multi-instrumentalist who has a second career remixing artists like Klaxons, Bloc Party, and HEALTH, the art-damaged act that helps "Crimewave" become a candied but claustrophobic piece of electro pop. The more you listen to this debut album, the clearer Crystal Castles' vision becomes. They're deadly serious and unnervingly self-conscious — in a constant battle between darkness and light, really — but that's exactly what lends credence to their sci-fi soundtracks. Aside from glimmers of sadness and sun-baked hope (the ambient haze of "Tell Me What To Swallow," the surprisingly gorgeous "Vanished," which swipes its vocals from a Van She song called, err, "Sex City"), Glass is essentially leading Crystal Castles through a postmodern hardcore album, bursting at the bit-crushing seams with distorted jams like "Alice Practice" and "xxzxcuzx Me." We wouldn't have it any other way.

Crystal Castles

They have surpassed my expectations. The anticipation for this album was very weak, but after one listen I was hooked. They have polished up their demos, and have made one of the most unique albums to come out so far this year. Some highlights of the album (though all of the tracks shine) are the always fantastic, "Alice Practice," which after all, did result in the beginning of CC. "Air War's" glitchy ticks and cryptic, layered vocals will stay in your mind for hours at work, school, home, working out, just about anywhere. The golden track of the album happens to be a remix: "Vanished." It isn't marked, but it is the remix of Van She's track, "Sex City." It's so luscious, rich, and it tingles your ears with mixed emotions. You definitely can't miss out on this track- this is the song you should download if you're skeptical about which one to scope out if unsure to purchase the whole album. All in all, Ethan and Alice have managed to come together to form a solid debut. Every track will move you. Definately give this disc a chance- it won't disappoint you.

Great Buy

This is one of the best electronic cd's that i have ever bought. If you like Justice you may also like this cd. There is a really cool use of 80's video game sounds in most of the songs like crimewave.

Biography

Formed: Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Genre: Electronic

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Fusing low-res electronic noise and pop hooks so effortlessly that it can seem accidental, Crystal Castles began as producer/multi-instrumentalist Ethan Kath's solo project in late 2003. Kath got the moniker from the name of She-Ra's dwelling in the He-Man and Masters of the Universe cartoon series; it's also the name of a 1983 Atari video game, which is oddly appropriate, considering that one component of the band's distinctive sound comes from a keyboard modified with an Atari 5200 sound chip....
