iTunes Review

Recorded over two nights — October 29 and November 1, 2006 — at New York City’s Beacon Theatre for a live video shoot with Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese, this 22-track live album captures a fully fortified Rolling Stones running through select highlights from the band’s 45 year career. Back-up singers, an active horn section, and keyboard reinforcements give every song a wide-screen attack that covers all angles. Singer Mick Jagger is in fine shout and uses the occasion to bring out legendary bluesman Buddy Guy for his blues vamp “Champagne and Reefer,” while also making room for the White Stripes’ Jack White to jam out on the Exile on Main Street cut “Loving Cup,” and Christina Aguilera to camp it up for the once-shocking “Live With Me.” The show’s most recent tune, “She Was Hot” from 1983’s Undercover, is turned back into an R&B romp. 1978’s Some Girls is amply represented with the title track, a near punkish “Shattered,” “Just My Imagination,” and “Faraway Eyes.” The band keeps the sound tough, veering towards actual heavy metal for “Satisfaction” and adding a terse chunky edge to “Connection” and “Paint It, Black.” Didn’t they once sing “What a drag it is getting old?” Wouldn’t know it from here.

The "newest" song on this album was released 26 years ago in 1983. They play well, but come on - do we really need another live version of "Jumping Jack Flash"?

I bought this album because of all the rave reviews on the itunes store page... and I must say, while I am a HUGE stones fan, I was really disappointed. Mick's voice is weak at best, the guitar riffs are sloppy and often lazy (most noticeably on the beginning of All Down the Line, although Ronnie does manage to pull together a decent solo on the slide), and the guest acts come off as cookie -cutter and contrived. While I am also a White Stripes / Raconteurs fan, Jack White detracts from Loving Cup more than he adds, and as for Christina Aguilera... well, you can guess how that turns out. The versions of Shattered and As Tears Go By are so bad that it is almost comical - Mick's voice today can't nearly pull off the music - hall esque beauty of As Tears Go By, while Shattered comes off as some kind of generic hard rock Guns-N-Roses / Aerosmith imitation. Overall, the songs totally lack the energy, edginess, and enthusiasm of the originals (or the live versions from even just a few years ago), and with the army of backup singers and studio musicians and comfortable, rehearsed arrangements often come off as sounding almost like Broadway show tunes. On top of all this, they insist on playing their "40 licks" classics, leaving their newer songs off entirely, despite the fact that this is the tour for the "Bigger Bang" album, depriving us of live cuts from this actually really good album. It would also be nice to have something off Bridges to Babylon, or anything after 1988's Undercover (they include a really mediocre version of "She Was Hot," which just sounds creepy). There is a high point - "Champagne and Reefer" with Buddy Guy. The band settles into an easy groove, not trying to recapture the energy of their twenties, and pulls off an interesting and actually pretty good cut, with Buddy Guy contributing strongly, as one would expect. If I were you, I would buy that song alone - the rest of the album, unfortunately, just isn't worth it.

It rocks form start to finish!

All of these songs rock form when you click on it. As Tears Go By in my mind made me cry a little. The only problem with this album is you can't listen to Undercover Of The Night, which is not to big of a problem but I still want to listen to it. Don't let kids listen to Champagne & Reefer (unless they no every bad word) because Mick Jagger says the MF word. But I still don't get why people give this CD a bad review. So don't listen to them, listen to your own opinion. Anyway, this album rocks hard, it really sticks it to the man. I also have one thing to say about everyone,
Mick your strut is really funny
Keith rock as usually, wish you didn't smoke
Charlie is always keeping the beat and is relaxed
Ronnie you rock, wish you didn't smoke

By the time the Rolling Stones began calling themselves the World's Greatest Rock & Roll Band in the late '60s, they had already staked out an impressive claim on the title. As the self-consciously dangerous alternative to the bouncy Merseybeat of the Beatles in the British Invasion, the Stones had...
