Album Review

Former Del Fuego Dan Zanes has been anything but dormant since the rootsy college rock collective called it quits in 1990. Six years after his 1995 solo debut, Cool Down Time, Zanes discovered a way to merge his two favorite things (fatherhood and music) into a sustainable career with a series of folk albums for kids that has proven to be just as enjoyable for their larger counterparts. After snagging a Grammy Award in 2007 for the singalong album Catch That Train, Zanes, ever the cultural sponge, gathered his musician friends from New York's Latino community and began work on a collection of songs from the Spanish-speaking Americas. The resulting Nueva York!, referred to frequently in print by Zanes as his "pro-immigration CD," features 17 high quality songs, mostly traditional, that touch on many Latin folk styles like cumbia, merengue, son, and bachata. Zanes brought in some serious muscle this time around, including Marc Ribot, Panamanian actress/singer Daphne Rubin-Vega, Latin jazz singer Lila Downs, Mexican rockers the Villa-Lobos Brothers, and Afro-Colombian roots ensemble La Cumbiamba Eneyé, and he allows the spotlight to fall on them more times than not, resulting in a fun, all-inclusive listening experience that's a lot like sitting on a hot set of apartment steps during a summer block party.

More great music for EVERYONE (this time in Spanish)

Dan Zanes and Friends latest release features all that you love about the band: wild, energetic collaborations and quieter songs with tremendous raw beauty. Oh, but the songs are in Spanish! They've come a long way since "Malti." This collection of favorites from several Latin American countries is, as Dan says in his concerts, his pro-immigration CD. Thanks, Dan, for giving our kids (and us!) a great time while provoking interest in Hispanic culture and vital social issues.

Another classic

Those who like Dan Zanes anyway will like this as well; basically, a whole album of those latin numbers that have been sprinkled through his previous releases. Somehow, even after being gobbled up by Disney, Zanes is still himself. He brings his typical eclectic, folk approach to a collection of latin songs in this album with an underlying pro-immigration, or at least pro-diversity, context. For those who don't yet know this guy, he's the best kid's music artist out there, because both kids and parents can honestly say they like his music. He's the only artist we don't automatically turn off when the kids fall asleep listening to it.

Great CD for kids and parents. Introduction to spanish early and great music.

Biography

Born: 1961 in Exeter, NH

Genre: Children's Music

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

After years of rocking in the 1980s with the Del Fuegos, singer/songwriter Dan Zanes created his own band, the Dan Zanes Trio, in 1994. The group got started when Zanes was hanging out with producer Mitchell Froom in Lower Manhattan; after adding drummer Jerry Marotta, they began playing their sparse blues and folk-rock to small crowds in clubs like the CBGB Gallery. Produced by Froom, the trio's debut LP, Cool Down Time, a raw rock effort influenced by '60s-era R&B, appeared in 1995. In 2001...
