iTunes Review
An indie-rap mainstay and founding member of the now-defunct Brooklyn crew Non-Phixion, Ill Bill has been putting in work since the late '90s, serving up rugged rhymes and extra-grimy music heavy on conspiracy theories, BK pride, and bloodthirsty street scenes. Howie Made Me Do It is a mixtape that's better than most emcees' real albums, loaded with heavy yet funky production and dark but wildly entertaining lyricism. Guest features abound, coming from frequent collaborators La Coka Nostra, Vinnie Paz, and Non-Phixion homies DJ Eclipse and Sabac Red, as well as Boot Camp soldiers Heltah Skeltah and Rustee Juxx and old-school New York icons Just Ice and Blaq Poet. There's not a weak moment here, and any serious fan of the hardcore East Coast underground sound is in for a treat. Check out "Megatron," "Uncrushables," "Brick Wall," and "Rap Assassins."
